TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a model that assesses firms' innovation and dynamic capabilities perspectives based on four essential capabilities: development, operations, management, and transaction capabilities, using data from a survey of 1,107 Brazilian manufacturing firms.
Abstract: Innovation and dynamic capabilities have gained considerable attention in both academia and practice While one of the oldest inquiries in economic and strategy literature involves understanding the features that drive business success and a firm’s perpetuity, the literature still lacks a comprehensive model of innovation and dynamic capabilities This study presents a model that assesses firms’ innovation and dynamic capabilities perspectives based on four essential capabilities: development, operations, management, and transaction capabilities Data from a survey of 1,107 Brazilian manufacturing firms were used for empirical testing and discussion of the dynamic capabilities framework Regression and factor analyses validated themodel; we discuss the results, contrasting with the dynamic capabilities’ framework Operations Capability is the least dynamic of all capabilities, with the least influence on innovation This reinforces the notion that operations capabilities as “ordinary capabilities,” whereas management, development, and transaction capabilities better explain firms’ dynamics and innovation

TL;DR: This paper studied connoisseurship consumption and consumers' taste in the context of coffee consumption in North American specialty coffee contexts. But no research has addressed the role of ritual processes in consumption, and no one has identified how consumers establish and manipulate their distinction from other consumers.
Abstract: Although the consumer culture field has addressed the role of ritual processes in consumption, no research has yet identified how connoisseur consumers, through ritual practices, establish and manipulate their distinction from other consumers. Drawing on key concepts from ritual theory, this research addresses the role played by ritual in connoisseurship consumption and consumers’ taste. In conducting an ethnographic study on connoisseurship consumption, the first author immersed himself in the North American specialty coffee context—Toronto, Montreal, Seattle, and New York—from August 2013 to July 2014. He used long interviews and participant observation to collect data, which was then interpreted using a hermeneutic approach. We introduce the taste transformation ritual, theorizing the process that converts regular consumers into connoisseur consumers by establishing and reinforcing differences between mass and connoisseurship consumption. We develop a broader theoretical account that builds on consumption ritual and taste formation.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors analyzed the relationship between stages of the organizational life cycle proposed by Lester et al. and the elements of influence of the F-PEC family (power, experience, and culture).
Abstract: The distinctive features of family firms, such as family influence, add complexity to organizational life-cycle models in terms of the different stages of development. This research analyzes the relationship between stages of the organizational life cycle proposed by Lester et al. (2003) and the elements of influence of the F-PEC family (power, experience, and culture). The study was developed through a sample of 117 Brazilian family companies, without the participation of companies with shares traded on the stock exchange, and employed statistical treatment of the data through a structural equation model. As a result, the elements of F-PEC were partially identified in the sample. Power indicates the control of the company by the family, experience indicates the role of the different generations, and culture indicates the values of the controllers. In particular, it should be pointed out that, at birth, power and culture play important roles; in maturity, experience and culture stand out, and in rejuvenation, power and culture have been identified as characteristic. As an exploratory analysis, the article contributes to the understanding of organizations, by indicating the development of comparative analyses and performance on the variables that provide migration planning to more desirable stages, such as growth, maturity, and rejuvenation.

TL;DR: The “coupled processes” model is revealed as a set of dynamic capabilities presenting ambidexterity in complex systems industries, a finding that may be relevant for newly industrialized economies.
Abstract: The dynamics of innovation in complex systems industries is becoming an independent research stream. Apart from conventional uncertainties related to commerce and technology, complex-system industries must cope with systemic uncertainty. This paper’s objective is to analyze evolving technological paths from one product generation to the next through two case studies in the Brazilian aerospace industry, considering systems integration as an empirical instantiation of dynamic capabilities. A proposed “coupled processes” model intertwines two organizational processes regarded as two levels of dynamic capabilities: new product and technological developments. The model addresses the role of emergent properties in shaping a firm’s technological base. Moreover, it uses a technology readiness level to unveil systems integration business tricks and as a decision-making yardstick. The “coupled processes” model is revealed as a set of dynamic capabilities presenting ambidexterity in complex systems industries, a finding that may be relevant for newly industrialized economies.

TL;DR: In this paper, the effects of gender diversity on dynamic capabilities among micro firms were analyzed by analyzing the gender of managers and personnel in 124 Ukrainian tourism micro firms and found that team gender diversity has positive effects on a firm's seizing and reconfiguration abilities.
Abstract: Gender issues are well-researched in the general management literature, particular in studies on new ventures. Unfortunately, gender issues have been largely ignored in the dynamic capabilities literature. We address this gap by analyzing the effects of gender diversity on dynamic capabilities among micro firms. We consider the gender of managers and personnel in 124 Ukrainian tourism micro firms. We examine how a manager’s gender affects the firm’s sensing capacities and investigate how it moderates team gender diversity’s impact on sensing capacities. We also investigate how personnel composition impacts seizing and reconfiguration capacities. We find that female managers have several shortcomings concerning a firm’s sensing capacity but that personnel gender diversity increases this capacity. Team gender diversity has positive effects on a firm’s seizing and reconfiguration abilities. Our study advances research on gender diversity and its impact on firm capabilities and illustrates its relevance for staffing practices in micro firms.

TL;DR: Understanding is enabled of the path that the RAE journal has followed throughout its existence including 22 different management periods, the increase of authorship within its publications during 14 time intervals, the most frequent and important terms and keywords appearing in its published documents, and the formation of co-authoring networks of researchers who contribute to the development of the Administration science in the Country.
Abstract: This article examined more than five decades of the Revista de Administracao de Empresas (Journal of Business Administration [RAE]), between 1961 and 2016, through accessing documents made available on the internet in the electronic repository of periodicals and magazines of the Biblioteca Digital da Fundacao Getulio Vargas-Escola de Administracao de Empresas de Sao Paulo (Digital Library of the Getulio Vargas Foundation-School of Business Administration of Sao Paulo), which follows the Open Archives Initiative-Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH) of interoperability between digital repositories. A total of 2,381 documents published in the journal (1,422 articles, 217 editorials, 62 opinion articles, and 680 reviews) were collected through an automated process and later analyzed using techniques such as bibliometrics, text mining, social networking, and geo-analysis. This study enables understanding of the path that the RAE journal has followed throughout its existence including 22 different management periods, the increase of authorship within its publications during 14 time intervals, the most frequent and important terms and keywords appearing in its published documents, and the formation of co-authoring networks of researchers who contribute to the development of the Administration science in the Country.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors discuss the impact of the packaging sectoral agreement in the Brazilian recycling chain and packaging design under the principles of Extended Producer Responsibility, using document analysis and interviews with multiple stakeholders, including representatives of the public sector, private sector and recycling cooperatives.
Abstract: This study discusses the impact of the packaging sectoral agreement in the Brazilian recycling chain and packaging design under the principles of Extended Producer Responsibility. The study uses document analysis and interviews with multiple stakeholders, including representatives of the public sector, private sector, and recycling cooperatives. Content analysis was used to analyze and interpret the data collected. The findings point to expanding the collection of recyclables, with potential benefits for income generation in cooperatives, but with no impact on the process of effectively developing more sustainable products and packaging. The absence of individual targets provides an alternative for companies to comply with the legislation through very reduced costs. The proposal related to managing packs of different features equally, and the packaging development paradigm that focuses on competitiveness at the expense of recyclability, commits the results promised by the sectoral agreement.

Abstract: Coopetition is a relationship strategy between firms or institutions that compete and cooperate simultaneously in different areas. Coopetition occurs in several inter-organizational arrangements. This article establishes theoretical propositions about coopetition strategies based on the Consortium of Community Universities in the South of Brazil (Consorcio das Universidades Comunitarias Gauchas - Comung), which is formed of 15 higher education institutions (HEIs) located in the South of Brazil. This article investigates a single case with multiple analysis units conducted through in loco interviews with the President of the Comung and the managers of the HEIs, along with secondary data. The results indicate that coopetition has been used as a mechanism for market protection and to gain access to unavailable resources individually from the dynamic interactions between the Comung HEIs.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the relationship between performance perspectives of the balanced scorecard using partial least squares path modeling and found that operational and analytical IT-enabled dynamic capability had positive effects on business process improvement and corporate performance.
Abstract: Few studies have investigated the influence of “information capital,” through IT-enabled dynamic capability, on corporate performance, particularly in economic turbulence. Our study investigates the causal relationship between performance perspectives of the balanced scorecard using partial least squares path modeling. Using data on 845 Brazilian companies, we conduct a quantitative empirical study of firms during an economic crisis and observe the following interesting results. Operational and analytical IT-enabled dynamic capability had positive effects on business process improvement and corporate performance. Results pertaining to mediation (endogenous variables) and moderation (control variables) clarify IT’s role in and benefits for corporate performance.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors propose a qualitative research education model supported by the concept of performative judgment, which draws upon Aristotle's virtues of thought via Strati's idea of sensible knowledge.
Abstract: The aim of this essay is to reflect critically on qualitative research education in doctoral management programs. The central idea is to offer a qualitative research education model supported by the concept of performative judgment. The notion of performative judgment draws upon Aristotle's virtues of thought via Strati's idea of sensible knowledge. The proposal focuses on a theoretical understanding of qualitative research education rather than prescribing pedagogical techniques or steps. The performative judgment education model is therefore open-ended and flexible and may fit in different doctoral program settings. It also helps to reveal the differences between the notions of training and education, showing how they can work together in the educational process.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the perception of trust in businesses' collaborative behavior and found that there is a strong correlation between trust in clients and horizontal relationships, and that the presence of trust is independent and isolated and not a permanent, routine attitude.
Abstract: This study aims to integrate interorganizational relationships (both vertical and horizontal ones) through the perception of trust in businesses’ collaborative behavior. We will use as our empirical field the Brazilian furniture industry production clusters situated in the cities of Arapongas, Mirassol, Uba and Bento Goncalves. Data were collected through questionnaires which were administered in loco and analyzed using correlation analysis and the Granger causality test. Trust was analyzed in the benevolence dimension and its relationship with commitment. Results demonstrated that there is causality in the horizontal relationship and that there is no causality in relationships between suppliers and clients, nor in relationships between those and competitors. However, there is a strong correlation between trust in clients and horizontal relationships. Therefore, it was verified that the presence of trust in interorganizational relationships is independent and isolated, and not a permanent, routine attitude.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present a review of the literature on educational management suggesting an expansive learning perspective, and introduce the notion of collaborative agency as theoretical background, which implies different subjects taking part and negotiating decisions to be made during the research beyond school settings.
Abstract: This research paper discusses activities developed in a school located in a favela in the city of Sao Paulo, Brazil, and its surrounding community to deal with the issue of flooding. First, I present a review of the literature on educational management suggesting an expansive learning perspective, then I introduce the notion of collaborative agency as theoretical background. Methodologically, this study focuses on critical collaborative research and formative intervention, which implies different subjects taking part and negotiating decisions to be made during the research beyond school settings. The analysis is based on categories of description and argumentation, which contribute to the scrutiny of different voices and activities in the respective school and community. Thus, I discuss how collaborative agency contributes to the transformation of the given context: first, how the community becomes involved in the activities of the school, and second, how the school is involved in the activities of the community to overcome the problem of flooding.

TL;DR: In this paper, a survey of 102 large non-financial organizations operating in Brazil, they identified that depending on the arrangement between isomorphic forces and diffusion to which the PCGs are subjected, they assume ceremonial (5%), instrumental (61%), or mixed (26%) behavioral characteristics.
Abstract: Our research, conducted in the context of organizational management in Brazil, aimed at deepening the knowledge in the Managerial Accounting field. The purpose was to propose a construct that contributes to understanding managers’ perceptions of the sociomateriality of management accounting practices (praticas de contabilidade gerencial, MAP) based on the ceremonial (rites-based) versus instrumental (problem solving) institutional logic, drawing on New Institutional Sociology and on Bush’s digressions (1983, 1987). Through a survey of 102 large non-financial organizations operating in Brazil, we identified that depending on the arrangement between isomorphic forces and diffusion to which the PCGs are subjected, they assume ceremonial (5%), instrumental (61%), or mixed (26%) behavioral characteristics. We infer that in these organizations, PCGs are primarily being used as problem solving techniques and contribute to changing the context in which they are applied.

TL;DR: The authors argue that organizations can manage their collective memory as resources that aid the objective reproduction and exploitation of existing routines, the interpretive reconstruction and recombination of past capabilities for adaptation to environmental change, and the imaginative exten-sion and exploration of collective memory for anticipated scenarios and outcomes.
Abstract: Dynamic capabilities (DCs) are the processes that organizations develop to remain competitive over time. However, in spite of the importance of temporality in the development of DCs, the roles of time, history, and memory remain largely implicit. In fact, most studies focus on the past as a source of constraints and limits for managerial action. Alternatively, we advocate for a social constructionist view of the past. Our core argument is that the capacity to manage the past is a critical competence of modern organizations. We argue that organizations can manage their collective memory as resources that aid the objective reproduction and exploitation of existing routines, the interpretive reconstruction and recombination of past capabilities for adaptation to environmental change, and the imaginative extension and exploration of collective memory for anticipated scenarios and outcomes. This renewed view of time, history, and memory is better suited for a dynamic theory of competitive advantage.

TL;DR: In this paper, a structural regression model of information governance (IG) was tested with data from a survey conducted with IT executives of banks operating in Brazil, and the results showed that, in the perception of the IT executives surveyed, the information governance factors - Policies, Systems (IS / IT) and Structure -have direct and indirect effects on value.
Abstract: The banking industry is recognized as one of the highest information technology (IT) investments in Brazil and worldwide, by having well-defined business processes, and its dynamism in adopting new technologies and processes. In this context, with data from a survey conducted with IT executives of banks operating in Brazil, a structural regression model of information governance (IG) was tested. The main objective is to validate a GI model for banks. The results showed that, in the perception of the IT executives surveyed, the information governance factors - Policies, Systems (IS / IT) and Structure - have direct and indirect effects on value.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors used the theoretical framework of the belief-action-outcome model to understand how institutional pressures and managers' environmental beliefs influence the adoption of Green Information Technology (Green IT).
Abstract: This study aims to understand how institutional pressures and managers’ environmental beliefs influence the adoption of Green Information Technology (Green IT). The theoretical framework of the Belief-Action-Outcome model is used. In a qualitative research approach, data on 10 university IT managers were collected through interviews and a checklist of Green IT practices. Content analysis on the interviews was performed and the responses to the checklist were analyzed by frequency. Analysis results show that the institutional pressure most related to the adoption of Green IT for the interviewees is mimetic. Regarding environmental beliefs, while eight managers expressed concerns about environmental issues, only three reported their own initiatives. Other respondents said they faced barriers such as bureaucratic dysfunctions and lack of management support to propose actions related to Green IT.

Abstract: The study of resistance organizations, multiplicity of social experiences squandered by the dominant organizational discourse, is one of the critical political actions in the context of organizational studies. Although Brazil has a long critical path in critical analysis of organizations, the alternatives are often addressed in an abstract and conceptual mode. Thus, through an intrinsic case study, we analyzed the organizational dynamics of the Off Axis Circuit (FDE), a grouping of collectives that make independent cultural production, as an organization at the limit of the dominant discursive social formation. Through FDE analysis, we seek to demonstrate the limits of the dominant theoretical framework in the study of organizations, presenting alternative approaches that seem more appropriate to explain the social context in which we live

TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe the experience of undergraduate students from nursing and physical education programs in educational activities promoted to the community of a state university in the south of Bahia on Heimlich maneuvers and CPR.
Abstract: The diseases of the circulatory system, especially heart diseases, are one of the leading causes of deaths in Brazil and worldwide. However, this mortality profile shows a reductionist trend through the use of correct techniques of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), employed by trained lay rescuers who perform the first assistance to the victims. Therefore, the aim of this study was to describe the experience of undergraduate students from Nursing and Physical Education programs in educational activities promoted to the community of a state university in the south of Bahia on Heimlich maneuvers and CPR. This is an experience report on the activities arising from the extension project entitled “University Health: Promotion and Prevention Actions for Wellness”, which was conducted for the public considered ignorant of the theme. Thus, participants were 10 technical and administrative employees, 05 interns and 12 students of the undergraduate nursing program. The extension activities were scheduled in 12 meetings between March and November 2015 (except June to August due to a strike in Bahia State Universities), with a discussion of Heimlich maneuvers and CPR in adults and children as important steps in reducing mortality rates from heart diseases when performed early and effectively. Most participants reported that they realized the importance of the workshops as a potential measure to “save lives” and reduce complications after cardiac arrest. The monitors reported on the need to expand the project to other places such as schools and public and private companies, to enable the training of a larger number of people for this service under the new guidelines of 2015, as well as the deployment of automatic defibrillators in public spaces associated with training a specific group of people to use them. For the monitors, the project also allowed the opportunity to exercise the theoretical knowledge, not always seen in depth of information and execution in the basic curriculum subjects of each program.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined the rate of awareness, use, and benefits of software process improvement (SPI) initiatives in Canadian software development firms using SPSS as the analytical tool.
Abstract: Since 1982, the software development community has been concerned with the delivery of quality systems. Software process improvement (SPI) is an initiative to avoid the delivery of low quality systems. However, the awareness and adoption of SPI is low. Thus, this study examines the rate of awareness, use, and benefits of SPI initiatives in Canadian software development firms. Using SPSS as the analytical tool, this study found that 59% of Canadian software development firms are aware of SPI programs and 43% of employees use a form of SPI programs to develop software products. Although the sample size is small and the results cannot be generalized, the sample firms that use SPI programs reported an improvement in software product quality as the greatest benefit. These findings confirm the importance of SPI programs as a means of producing higher-quality software products, which can increase the likelihood of software companies winning global contracts.
