••
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors reviewed the case records of 184 patients with polymicrobial sepsis seen at three Dallas hospitals between 1972 and 1977 and identified significant positive correlations (p < 0.05) between mortality resulting from poly-microbial SE and underlying disease category, failure to manifest fever, a pulmonary portal of entry, hypotension, and hospital-associated SE, but no significant correlation with outcome could be demonstrated for age, hospital service, species of infecting microorganisms, number of microorganisms isolated from blood, WBC count, or antimicrobial therapy.

••
TL;DR: The failure of GFR to decrease at night in blacks and older whites may be related to an altered natriuretic capacity, and decreases in GFR with aging are greater in blacks than whites.
66 citations
••
TL;DR: Serum levels of muscle enzymes including creatine phosphokinase (CPK) have been reported to be abnormal in hypothyroidism and data in three patients demonstrate a fairly constant rate of fall in CPK with a half-time for disappearance of approximately ten to 12 days.
56 citations
••
TL;DR: The results suggest that previously reported increased combined factor VII-X activity in nephrotic syndrome is due to elevation of both factor VII and factor X activities.
50 citations
••
TL;DR: Review of ITP cases at Upstate Medical Center and a recent report in the literature indicate that there may be a general association between ITP and malignancy.
44 citations
••
TL;DR: Clinical diversity in drug associated acute nontraumatic rhabdomyolysis was observed, with the group of patients with renal failure had higher incidence of coma and more patients with very hight muscle enzyme elevation than NRF patients, and the patients with ORF were slightly younger than patients with NORF.
42 citations
••
TL;DR: Increased serum iodide concentrations secondary to iodine absorption through wounds treated with povidone-iodine dressings is described, and cardiovascular instability and renal failure occurred concurrent with systemic iodide accumulation.
38 citations
••
TL;DR: Three patients with serious infections due to beta hemolytic streptococci, Lancefield group G are presented and the clinical syndromes are septicemia with possible endocarditis in a patient with laryngeal carcinoma, septic arthritis in a healthy boy and endocariditis in an adult with no previous underlying valvular disease.
29 citations
••
TL;DR: What is known about red cell parameters in elderly patients is reviewed and the questions of whether new geriatric norms should be established are attempted to answer.
25 citations
••
TL;DR: Aspergilloma should be considered when a patient with allergic bronchopulmonary as pergillosis develops a cavitary pulmonary lesion, and the brief history of preceding asthma and the rapid developement of the aspergillsoma in the absence of typical roentgenographic features are unusual.
24 citations
••
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe two patients with Legionnaires' disease (LD) and acute renal failure not associated with hypotension or therapy with nephrotoxic antibiotics, and the clinical course of both patients and renal pathology of the first patient were compatible with acute tubular necrosis.
••
TL;DR: An optimal combined modality treatment plan, one in which each cellular compartment of this truly multiforme tumor is effectively addressed, remains to be designated.
••
TL;DR: The coexistence of Philadelphia negative chronic granulocytic leukemia (CGL) of the neutrophilic type and IgA monoclonal gammopathy is reported in a patient and the possible relation between the two proliferative processes is discussed.
••
TL;DR: Treatment with a variety of antimicrobials was generally successful and 87% of the infected joints was restored to pre-infection status and there were no specific characteristics in the clinical presentation which would allow an early precise etiologic diagnosis.
••
TL;DR: Patients with acute leukemia who develop hoarseness should be investigated for laryngeal candidiasis and considered for systemic antifungal therapy.
••
TL;DR: The responses of seronegative adults to two live attenuated rubella virus vaccines were compared and the serologic response to both vaccines was excellent.
••
TL;DR: The case is unique in that irreversible changes developed shortly after a single course of BCNU whereas heretofore such permanent changes have been associated only with multiple courses of the drug.
••
TL;DR: A 47-year-old patient without underlying disease who has had three relapses of nocardial pneumonia despite treatment with sulfasoxazole and tetracycline for nine, 15, and 12 months for the first three episodes.
••
TL;DR: The renal histopathology in one patient revealed findings typical of focal glomerular sclerosis, and in light of the clinical similarities in these two patients, it is likely that they have a familial form of focal gynaecological sclerosis.
••
TL;DR: The diagnosis of Legionnaires' disease was strengthened when the transthoracic aspirate revealed weakly staining gram-negative bacilli with no growth noted on culture.
••
TL;DR: The dissociated response of prolactin to TRH and chlorpromazine suggests that the pituitary hormone deficiencies may be secondary to hypothalamic dysfunction.
••
TL;DR: Bacterial relapse, the prevalent form of recurrence, could not be explained by the isolation of cell wall-defective bacteria, rapid emergence of resistant mutants or inadequately treated chronic bacterial prostatitis, and the customary practice of prescribing a two-week course of therapy falls far short of the desired treatment goal.
••
TL;DR: In vitro testing of the isolates confirmed susceptibility to penicillin, and S equinus should now be recognized as a human pathogen as are the other group D streptococci, S bovis and the enterococci.
••
TL;DR: It is suggested that the prolonged hypercalcemia associated with hyperparathyroidism results in a decreased calcitonin reserve which may persist for unknown reasons.
••
TL;DR: In this article, a patient is described with hypothalamic dysfunction: partial hypophysiotropic hypopituitarism, hypernatremia and hypodipsia, and a mathematical model for osmoregulation is proposed in which the comparator transforms a gradient of osmolality W-T into an energy (E) for ADH release and for thirst sensation, according to (E ) = k.n W T.
••
TL;DR: A female with the TAR syndrome is described who presented with the first known onset of hemorrhagic phenomenon at the age of 47, the oldest age of onset described in the literature.
••
TL;DR: The diagnosis of aortotomy site infection should be entertained in patients who have had aortic valve surgery who develop fever and embolic phenomena with or without positive blood cultures coupled with no evidence of valve dysfunction, and who respond inappropriately to antibiotic therapy.
••
TL;DR: Between 1966 and 1977, 55 patients at Barnes Hospital were proven to have manifestations of histoplasmosis, with therapy most benefited those who completed a course of ≥1.5 gm of amphotericin B.
••
TL;DR: A 26-year-old female with the syndrome of multiple endocrine gland insufficiency developed pure red cell aplasia and a clinical remission was induced with prednisone and cyclophosphamide therapy as discussed by the authors.
••
TL;DR: Data suggest that a nonplasmid mediated resistance mechanism such as impermeability was responsible for the emergence of gentamicin resistance.
