A 100-Year Review: Protein and amino acid nutrition in dairy cows.
C.G. Schwab,Glen A. Broderick +1 more
TLDR
The industry awaits more robust and mechanistic models for predicting supplies and requirements of rumen-available N and absorbed AA, which will be useful in allowing for feeding lower protein diets and increased efficiency of microbial protein synthesis.About:

Nutrient requirements of dairy cattle
TL;DR: The following table summarizes the nutrient requirements of dairy cattle by type of milk type and type of feed they receive.

Invited review: Nitrogen in ruminant nutrition: A review of measurement techniques.
Alexander N. Hristov,André Bannink,Les A. Crompton,Pekka Huhtanen,Michael Kreuzer,Mark McGee,Pierre Noziere,Christopher K. Reynolds,Ali R. Bayat,David R. Yáñez-Ruiz,Jan Dijkstra,Ermias Kebreab,Angela Schwarm,K. J. Shingfield,Zhongtang Yu +14 more
TL;DR: Methods to study ruminant N metabolism have been developed over 150 yr of animal nutrition research, but many of them are laborious and impractical for application on a large number of animals and results can be variable, especially the methods based on measurements of digesta or blood flow.
Book ChapterDOI
Nutrition and feeding of dairy cattle
TL;DR: This chapter discusses the nutrients and how they are integral for dairy cattle performance (growth and milk production) and evaluates the feeding of calves and heifers.
Journal ArticleDOI
The nutritional value of tropical legume forages fed to ruminants as affected by their growth habit and fed form: A systematic review
J. Castro-Montoya,Uta Dickhoefer +1 more
TL;DR: This systematic review summarized literature data on the nutritional composition of tropical legume forages fed to cattle, sheep and, goats, explaining the nutritional variation between legumes depending on their growth habit and the form in which they are fed to the ruminant.
Journal ArticleDOI
Methionine supply alters mammary gland antioxidant gene networks via phosphorylation of nuclear factor erythroid 2-like 2 (NFE2L2) protein in dairy cows during the periparturient period.
TL;DR: Besides the consistent positive effect of methionine supply on systemic inflammation and oxidative stress status, the present data indicate a positive effect also on antioxidant mechanisms within the mammary gland, which are regulated, at least in part, via phosphorylation of NFE2L2 and its target genes.

Estimación lineal de los requerimientos nutricionales del NRC para ganado de leche
TL;DR: Linear regression equations have been obtained to directly calculate the nutrient requirements of dairy cattle (TDN, DE, ME, NEL,CP, Ca, P, Vitamin A and Vitamin D) on different physiological stages: maintenance, pregnancy and milk production based on NRC nutrient requirements tables.
Journal ArticleDOI
The estimation of protein degradability in the rumen from incubation measurements weighted according to rate of passage
E. R. Ørskov,I. McDonald +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a method for estimating the percentage of dietary protein that is degraded by microbial action in the rumen when protein supplement is added to a specified ration is proposed, where the potential degradability, p, is measured by incubating the supplement in artificial-fibre bags and is related to incubation time, t, by the equation p = a+b (1 − e -ct ).

The biochemistry of silage
TL;DR: The second edition of the book was published in 2013 as mentioned in this paper and has been updated by Dr McDonald and his former colleagues at the Edinburgh School of Agriculture, Dr Henderson and Dr Heron, who focused on the interactions between different microorganisms and their influence on the pattern of fermentation in the silo.

Effect of ammonia concentration on rumen microbial protein production in vitro
L. D Satter,L. L Slyter +1 more
TL;DR: The results suggest that addition of non-protein N supplements to ruminant rations are warranted only if the prevailing concentration of ruminal ammonia is less than 50 mg NH3-N/l ruminal fluid.
