A General Model of Query Processing in Information Retrieval Systems.
TLDR
The various query-processing methods are discussed and compared and some generalizations of fuzzy-subset theory have been suggested that would allow the user to specify queries with relevance weights or thresholds attached to terms.Abstract:
Most current document retrieval systems require that user queries be specified in the form of Boolean expressions. Although Boolean queries work, they have flaws. Some of the attempts to overcome these flaws have involved “partial-match” retrieval or the use of fuzzy-subset theory. Recently, some generalizations of fuzzy-subset theory have been suggested that would allow the user to specify queries with relevance weights or thresholds attached to terms. The various query-processing methods are discussed and compared.read more

Fuzzy sets and generalized Boolean retrieval systems
Donald H. Kraft,Duncan A. Buell +1 more
TL;DR: The generalized Boolean query model must be reconciled with the vector space approach, suggested new lattice structures for weighted retrieval, and probabilistic retrieval models, and proper retrieval evaluation mechanisms reflecting the fuzzy nature of retrieval are needed.

Modeling the retrieval process for an information retrieval system using an ordinal fuzzy linguistic approach
TL;DR: A linguistic model for an Information Retrieval System (IRS) defined using an ordinal fuzzy linguistic approach is proposed, and its use for modeling the imprecision and subjectivity that appear in the user‐IRS interaction is studied.

Importance in knowledge systems
TL;DR: Issues for a logic of weighted queries, with possibility of also weighting documents and logical connectors (in terms of intelligent retrieval, for example) are presented here, using “min” or t- norms, and soft operators involving p-norms.

Properties of extended Boolean models in information retrieval
TL;DR: This paper analyzes the behavioural aspects of the previous extended boolean models and addresses important mathematical properties to affect retrieval effectiveness and shows that P-Norm is the most suitable for achieving high retrieval effectiveness.

Set-based vector model: An efficient approach for correlation-based ranking
TL;DR: The results suggest that the set-based vector model provides a correlation-based ranking formula that is effective with general collections and computationally practical.

Decision-making in a fuzzy environment
Richard Bellman,Lotfi A. Zadeh +1 more
TL;DR: A reverse-flow technique is described for the solution of a functional equation arising in connection with a decision process in which the termination time is defined implicitly by the condition that the process stops when the system under control enters a specified set of states in its state space.

On Relevance, Probabilistic Indexing and Information Retrieval
M. E. Maron,J. L. Kuhns +1 more
TL;DR: Probabilistic indexing as discussed by the authors allows a computing machine, given a request for information, to make a statistical inference and derive a number (called the relevance number) for each document, which is a measure of the probability that the document will satisfy the given request.

Fuzzy requests: An approach to weighted boolean searches
TL;DR: The problem of how to permit a patron to represent the relative importance of various index terms in a Boolean request while retaining the desirable properties of a Boolean system is concerned.
