TLDR
In this article, a columnar topography in obliquely deposited oxide films prepared by thermal and electron beam deposition at low rates is presented, where column size, chaining, and inclination are described and correlations with liquid crystal surface tilt alignment discussed.
Abstract
We present direct evidence of a columnar topography in obliquely deposited oxide films prepared by thermal and electron beam deposition at low rates. Column size, chaining, and inclination will be described and the correlations with liquid‐crystal surface tilt alignment discussed.

Thin film retardation plate by oblique deposition

TL;DR: Homogeneous quarterwave plates with a bilayered structure 60 x 250 mm in size and ~3 microm thick on glass substrates are developed which showed promising optical properties which can compete with the conventional types of retardation plate.

Uniform Anchoring of Nematic Liquid Crystals on Self-Assembled Monolayers Formed from Alkanethiols on Obliquely Deposited Films of Gold

TL;DR: In this article, self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) formed by chemisorption of alkanethiols on the surface of obliquely deposited, 10 nm-thick, films of gold are useful in studies of the anchoring of liquid crystals (LCs) on surfaces.

Role of surface adsorption in the surface‐induced alignment of nematic liquid crystals on evaporated SiO films

TL;DR: In this paper, it is shown that a layer of liquid crystal molecules adsorbed on an evaporated SiO film plays an important role in aligning the bulk of the liquid crystal.

Using Isotropic, Nematic, and Smectic Fluids for the Study of Self-Assembled Monolayers Formed from Alkanethiols on Gold

TL;DR: In this paper, the use of isotropic and anisotropic fluids for the study of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) formed from alkanethiols on gold is reported.

A nematic liquid crystal storage display based on bistable boundary layer configurations

TL;DR: In this paper, a twisted nematic liquid crystal display effect exhibiting bistable equilibrium states under an applied field is described, where each state is characterized by a boundary layer configuration whose properties provide for optical differentiation of the states.

Thin film surface orientation for liquid crystals

TL;DR: Vacuum-deposited films have been used in substrate preparation for liquid-crystal cells as mentioned in this paper to provide an oriented surface for alignment of nematic liquid crystals far better than the well-known ''rubbed'' plate.

Oblique‐Incidence Anisotropy in Evaporated Permalloy Films

TL;DR: In this paper, a self-shadowing model is proposed to explain chain growth, i.e., the area behind a crystallite is left vacant because it is in the crystallite's shadow.

Accurate determination of liquid‐crystal tilt bias angles

TL;DR: In this article, a detailed analysis is given for three techniques used to determine the tilt bias angle of a nematic liquid crystal in contact with a boundary surface, including crystal rotation, capacitive and magnetic null methods.

Alignment of nematics and smectics on evaporated films

TL;DR: In this article, the alignment of nematics and smectics on substrates where an obliquely evaporated thin film has been previously deposited is discussed, and it is shown that the surface anchoring energy is substantially larger than with the traditional rubbing technique.

Topography of obliquely evaporated silicon oxide films and its effect on liquid-crystal orientation

TL;DR: In this article, columnar growth structure arrayed in row-like order has been detected for films deposited at both angles of incidence, and the columns lie in the plane of incidence in both cases.
