TLDR
The results indicate that osmotic stimulation increases AVT gene expression not only in individual neurons but also by activating subpopulation of neurons that are not observed in normally hydrated birds.

Steroid-induced plasticity in the sexually dimorphic vasotocinergic innervation of the avian brain: behavioral implications.

TL;DR: Vasotocin (VT, the antidiuretic hormone of birds) is synthesized by diencephalic magnocellular neurons projecting to the neurohypophysis, and these elements are expressed in a sexually dimorphic manner in regions involved in the control of different aspects of reproduction.
Journal ArticleDOI

Central vasotocin-immunoreactive system in a male passerine bird (junco hyemalis)

TL;DR: The widespread brain distribution of VT‐ir cell bodies and fibers in juncos generally resembles that of domestic birds and suggests a role for this neuropeptide in the control of reproductive behavior and physiology.
Journal ArticleDOI

The cloned avian neurohypophysial hormone receptors.

TL;DR: The phylogenetic relationships between the cloned avian receptors and other vertebrate and invertebrate neurohypophysial hormone receptors are explored and the functions of AVT in birds are examined.
Journal ArticleDOI

Identification of arginine vasotocin (AVT) neurons activated by acute and chronic restraint stress in the avian septum and anterior diencephalon.

TL;DR: Results of this study suggest that the NHpC, LS, VLT, BSTL, LHy and AVT-ir parvocellular neurons in the PVNc are associated with psychological stress in birds.
Journal ArticleDOI

Molecular cloning of an oxytocin-like receptor expressed in the chicken shell gland.

TL;DR: The cloning of a third neuropeptide receptor in the chicken is reported and Parsimony analysis reveals that the new receptor has highest homology to mammalian OT receptors and the MT receptors of non-mammalian vertebrates.

Journal ArticleDOI

Organization of adrenergic inputs to the paraventricular and supraoptic nuclei of the hypothalamus in the rat.

TL;DR: The results suggest that adrenergic inputs to the PVH and So, while arising from distinct medullary cell groups and presumably relaying different types of sensory information, are in a position to influence similar groups of parvicellular neurosecretory and/or autonomic‐related projection neurons.
Journal ArticleDOI

Reflex control of magnocellular vasopressin and oxytocin secretion

TL;DR: In this brief review, ongoing attempts to delineate these pathways are summarized and evidence for plasticity and local modulation of magnocellular reflexes in response to prolonged stimulation, such as chronic dehydration and lactation, is presented.
Journal ArticleDOI

Interaction of osmotic and volume stimuli in regulation of neurohypophyseal secretion in rats.

TL;DR: Adult male rats were injected subcutaneously with polyethylene glycol (PEG) solution, which causes hypovolemia by progressive isosmotic leaching of plasma fluid into a local edema, and plasma levels of AVP and Oxytocin were found to increase exponentially in response to induced plasma volume deficits up to 40%.
Journal ArticleDOI

Comparison of the effects of water deprivation and sodium chloride imbibition on the hormone content of the neurohypophysis of the rat

TL;DR: Vasopressin and oxytocin have been measured in the neurohypophysis of rats which had either been given a 2% NaCl solution to drink or been deprived of drinking water for up to 5 days.
