Abstract
Adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are thought to be at disproportionate risk of developing mental health comorbidities, with anxiety and depression being considered most prominent amongst these Yet, no systematic review has been carried out to date to examine rates of both anxiety and depression focusing specifically on adults with ASD This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the rates of anxiety and depression in adults with ASD and the impact of factors such as assessment methods and presence of comorbid intellectual disability (ID) diagnosis on estimated prevalence rates Electronic database searches for studies published between January 2000 and September 2017 identified a total of 35 studies, including 30 studies measuring anxiety (n = 26 070; mean age = 309, sd = 62 years) and 29 studies measuring depression (n = 26 117; mean age = 311, sd = 68 years) The pooled estimation of current and lifetime prevalence for adults with ASD were 27% and 42% for any anxiety disorder, and 23% and 37% for depressive disorder Further analyses revealed that the use of questionnaire measures and the presence of ID may significantly influence estimates of prevalence The current literature suffers from a high degree of heterogeneity in study method and an overreliance on clinical samples These results highlight the importance of community-based studies and the identification and inclusion of well-characterized samples to reduce heterogeneity and bias in estimates of prevalence for comorbidity in adults with ASD and other populations with complex psychiatric presentations

Meta-analysis of prevalence

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present methods for the meta-analysis of prevalence of multiple sclerosis using logit and double arcsine transformations to stabilise the variance and propose solutions to the problems that arise.

Autism spectrum disorder: definition, epidemiology, causes, and clinical evaluation.

TL;DR: Evidence that ASD is a neurobiological disorder influenced by both genetic and environmental factors affecting the developing brain is reviewed, and factors that correlate with ASD risk are enumerated.

The Lancet Commission on the future of care and clinical research in autism

TL;DR: The Lancet Commission on the future of care and clinical research in autism as mentioned in this paper proposes an evidence-based, stepped-care, and personalised approach for intervention and assessment in autism, involving multiple providers, with referral for the necessary support and services as the need arises.

Prevalence of comorbid psychiatric disorders among people with autism spectrum disorder: An umbrella review of systematic reviews and meta-analyses

TL;DR: A high burden of comorbid psychiatric disorders among people with ASD, including anxiety disorders, depressive disorders, bipolar and mood disorders, schizophrenia spectrum, suicidal behavior disorders, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, disruptive, impulse-control and conduct disorders amongst diverse age groups are revealed.
Journal ArticleDOI

Prevalence of psychiatric disorders in adults with autism spectrum disorder: A systematic review and meta-analysis

TL;DR: Results showed that attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder is the most prevalent psychiatric disorder in adults with ASD, and the lowest comorbidity prevalence rates of all diagnostic categories are the ones related to substance use and eating disorders.

Quantifying heterogeneity in a meta‐analysis

TL;DR: It is concluded that H and I2, which can usually be calculated for published meta-analyses, are particularly useful summaries of the impact of heterogeneity, and one or both should be presented in publishedMeta-an analyses in preference to the test for heterogeneity.

Conducting Meta-Analyses in R with the metafor Package

TL;DR: The metafor package provides functions for conducting meta-analyses in R and includes functions for fitting the meta-analytic fixed- and random-effects models and allows for the inclusion of moderators variables (study-level covariates) in these models.

The epidemiology of major depressive disorder: results from the National Comorbidity Survey Replication (NCS-R).

TL;DR: Notably, major depressive disorder is a common disorder, widely distributed in the population, and usually associated with substantial symptom severity and role impairment, and while the recent increase in treatment is encouraging, inadequate treatment is a serious concern.

Psychiatric disorders in children with autism spectrum disorders: Prevalence, comorbidity, and associated factors in a population-derived sample

TL;DR: Psychiatric disorders are common and frequently multiple in children with autism spectrum disorders and should be routinely evaluated in the clinical assessment of this group.
