TLDR
Concentrations of most PCBs and OC pesticides in ringed seal and polar bear populations in the Canadian Arctic are quite similar indicating a uniform geographic distribution of contamination, although alpha-HCH showed a distinct latitudinal gradient in bears due to higher levels in zones influenced by continental runoff.About:

Contaminants in the Canadian Arctic: 5 years of progress in understanding sources, occurrence and pathways.
Robie W. Macdonald,Leonard A. Barrie,Terry F. Bidleman,Miriam L. Diamond,Dennis Gregor,R. G. Semkin,William M. J. Strachan,Yi-Fan Li,Frank Wania,Mehran Alaee,L.B. Alexeeva,Sean Backus,R. Bailey,J.M. TL;DR: New knowledge developed under the NCP on the sources, occurrence and pathways of contaminants (organochlorines, Hg, Pb and Cd, PAHs, artificial radionuclides) are highlighted and compelling evidence for close connectivity between the global emission of contaminants from industrial and agricultural activities and the Arctic is provided.

Arctic contaminants : sources, occurrence and pathways
Leonard A. Barrie,D. J. Gregor,B. T. Hargrave,R. Lake,Derek C. G. Muir,R. Shearer,B. Tracey,Terry F. Bidleman +7 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that both the atmosphere and the ocean are important transport media for potentially toxic organic compounds in the northern polar region and even for the HCH substances, which are relatively easily measured and simple in composition compared to other synthetic organics.

Human health implications of environmental contaminants in Arctic Canada: A review
J. Van Oostdam,Andrew P. Gilman,Eric Dewailly,P Usher,B Wheatley,H Kuhnlein,S Neve,Jody Butler Walker,B Tracy,Mark Feeley,V Jerome,B Kwavnick +11 more
TL;DR: The impact of exposure to current levels of environmental contaminants in the Canadian Arctic on human health is assessed; the data and knowledge gaps that need to be filled by future human health research and monitoring are identified; and how these issues have changed since a first assessment is examined.
Journal ArticleDOI
Global contamination by persistent organochlorines and their ecotoxicological impact on marine mammals
TL;DR: It is concluded that marine mammals are one of the most vulnerable and possible target organisms with regard to long-term toxicity of hazardous man-made chemicals in the future.
Journal ArticleDOI
Biological and chemical factors of importance in the bioaccumulation and trophic transfer of persistent organochlorine contaminants in Arctic marine food webs.
TL;DR: The present paper summarizes the recent literature with an emphasis on identifying important ecological factors for explaining variability of OC concentrations among organisms and introduces simplification into models developed to assess OC dynamics in aquatic food webs.

The global distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in recent sediments

TL;DR: The qualitative PAH pattern is remarkably constant for most of the locations studied, and the quantitative PAH abundance increases with proximity to urban centers as discussed by the authors, consistent with anthropogenic combustion's being the major source of these compounds.

Organochlorine contaminants in arctic marine food chains: accumulation of specific polychlorinated biphenyls and chlordane-related compounds
TL;DR: Polychlorinated biphenyl congeners and chlordane-related compounds as well as DDT, hexachlorocyclohexane, toxaphene, and chlorobenzenes were determined in pooled arctic cod muscle and polar bear fat and in the blubber and liver of 59 ringed seals from the east-central Canadian Arctic.

Lead in Albacore: guide to lead pollution in Americans.
TL;DR: The magnitude of the pollution effect of lead contamination in canned tuna helps explain how skeletal concentrations of lead in typical Americans became elevated 500-fold above the natural concentrations measured in bones of Peruvians who lived in an unpolluted environment 1800 years ago.

Lead concentrations in the northeast Pacific: evidence for global anthropogenic perturbations
TL;DR: Lead concentrations were determined by isotope dilution mass spectrometry in 34 surface and deepwater samples collected in the northeast Pacific between Hawaii and California and off the California coast using a deep-water sampler protected against fouling by contamination from the ship and hydrowire.
