The coupling of a gaussian beam into thin films is investigated utilizing a full wave analysis. Maximum coupling efficiency for a planar structure is found to be 75% and is independent of the phase velocity of the waveguide mode in the film. Measured coupling values of up to 57% are reported. Coherence properties of the coupling procedure are discussed and optimization of physical parameters is outlined.read more

Measurement of Thin Film Parameters with a Prism Coupler
R. Ulrich,Reimund Torge +1 more
TL;DR: The prism coupler, known from experiments on integrated optics, can be used to determine the refractive index and the thickness of a light-guiding thin film by measuring the coupling angles at the prism and fitting them by a theoretical dispersion curve.

On the Excitation of Surface Waves
TL;DR: In this article, the amplitude of a surface wave which is excited by a dipole or any other power source can be determined without solving the entire excitation problem, and it is shown that surface waves are actually contained in complete solutions of excitation problems of cylindrical surface waveguides.
