Abstract
The coupling of a gaussian beam into thin films is investigated utilizing a full wave analysis. Maximum coupling efficiency for a planar structure is found to be 75% and is independent of the phase velocity of the waveguide mode in the film. Measured coupling values of up to 57% are reported. Coherence properties of the coupling procedure are discussed and optimization of physical parameters is outlined.

Light waves in thin films and integrated optics.

P. K. Tien
- 01 Nov 1971 -
TL;DR: The purpose of this paper is to review in some detail the important development of this new and fascinating field, and to caution the reader that the technology involved is difficult because of the smallness and perfection demanded by thin-film optical devices.

Measurement of Thin Film Parameters with a Prism Coupler

TL;DR: The prism coupler, known from experiments on integrated optics, can be used to determine the refractive index and the thickness of a light-guiding thin film by measuring the coupling angles at the prism and fitting them by a theoretical dispersion curve.

Analysis of curved optical waveguides by conformal transformation

TL;DR: In this paper, the method of conformal transformations is applied to the analysis of waveguide bends and simple first-order expressions that describe the dependence of the losses on waveguide parameters are derived.

On the Excitation of Surface Waves

Georg Goubau
TL;DR: In this article, the amplitude of a surface wave which is excited by a dipole or any other power source can be determined without solving the entire excitation problem, and it is shown that surface waves are actually contained in complete solutions of excitation problems of cylindrical surface waveguides.
