TLDR
It is concluded that individual susceptibility to lung cancer cannot be detected by an individual response to benzpyrene, at least in lymphocytes and at the chromosomal level.
Abstract
The effect of benzpyrene on sister chromatid exchange was determined in PHA-stimulated lymphocytes of 18 patients with lung cancer and 11 controls without cancer or bronchopulmonary diseases. Patients and controls did not differ either with respect to the spontaneous rate of sister chromatid exchanges or in their response to the carcinogen. We conclude that individual susceptibility to lung cancer cannot be detected by an individual response to benzpyrene, at least in lymphocytes and at the chromosomal level.

Sister Chromatid Exchanges

TL;DR: Analysis of sister chromatid exchange formation in cytological systems has already provided information about chromosome structure and has been used to detect the effects of clastogens and to differentiate between chromosome fragility diseases.

Sister chromatid exchanges in the peripheral blood of cigarette smokers and in lung cancer patients; and the effect of chemotherapy

TL;DR: Peripheral blood sister chromatid exchange rates in chronic cigarette smokers and in subjects with cancer do not differ from those in healthy nonsmokers.

Increased sister chromatid exchange frequency in lymphocytes in healthy cigarette smokers

TL;DR: It was concluded that cigarette smokers have increased SCE in peripheral lymphocytes, and the influence of cigarette smoking should be considered when using the SCE test principle to evaluate in vivo exposure to potential mutagens.

Sister-chromatid exchanges in human lymphocytes exposed during G0 to four classes of DNA-damaging chemicals

TL;DR: The findings suggest that not all classes of clatogenic chemicals which induce SCEs in proliferative cells substituted with BUdR are capable of inducing long-lived lesions in the DNA of Go lymphocytes that can lead to SCE formation.

Microfluorometric detection of deoxyribonucleic acid replication in human metaphase chromosomes

TL;DR: Growth of cells in medium containing BrdU for two generations allows fluorometric documentation of the semiconservative distribution of newly replicated DNA between sister chromatids, and regions of sister chromated exchange are demarcated.

Aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylase inducibility and bronchogenic carcinoma.

TL;DR: Aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylase is an inducible, membrane-bound enzyme involved in the metabolism of chemical carcinogens and in cultured human lymphocytes there is genetic variation.
