The Surveillance Research Program of the American Cancer Society's Department of Epidemiology and Surveillance Research reports its annual compilation of estimated cancer incidence, mortality, and survival data for the United States in the year 2000.Abstract:
The Surveillance Research Program of the American Cancer Society's Department of Epidemiology and Surveillance Research reports its annual compilation of estimated cancer incidence, mortality, and survival data for the United States in the year 2000. After 70 years of increases, the recorded number of total cancer deaths among men in the US declined for the first time from 1996 to 1997. This decrease in overall male mortality is the result of recent down-turns in lung and bronchus cancer deaths, prostate cancer deaths, and colon and rectum cancer deaths. Despite decreasing numbers of deaths from female breast cancer and colon and rectum cancer, mortality associated with lung and bronchus cancer among women continues to increase. Lung cancer is expected to account for 25% of all female cancer deaths in 2000. This report also includes a summary of global cancer mortality rates using data from the World Health Organization.read more

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors compared a combination of irinotecan, fluorouracil, and leucovorin with bolus doses of leucocil as first-line therapy for metastatic colorectal cancer.

TL;DR: The results support the notion that the clinical behavior of prostate cancer is linked to underlying gene expression differences that are detectable at the time of diagnosis.

TL;DR: Recent evidence indicates that NF-κB and the signalling pathways that are involved in its activation are also important for tumour development.

TL;DR: It is predicted that understanding the pathways that lead to the development of androgen-independent prostate cancer will pave the way to effective therapies for these, at present, untreatable cancers.

Colony-stimulating factor 1 promotes progression of mammary tumors to malignancy.
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that the growth of mammary tumors and the development to malignancy are separate processes and that CSF-1 selectively promotes the latter process, and that agents directed at CSf-1/CSF- 1R activity could have important therapeutic effects.

TL;DR: The declines in cancer incidence and death rates, particularly for lung cancer, are encouraging, however, unless recent upward trends in smoking among adolescents can be reversed, the lung cancer rates that are currently declining in the United States may rise again.

An adjustment to the 1997 estimate for new prostate cancer cases
TL;DR: It is now estimated that fewer than 210,000 new cases of prostate cancer may be diagnosed in 1997 than previously estimated.
