Abstract
. A wide variety of approaches can be applied under the heading of case study research; this paper explicitly discusses the range of the alternatives. Many papers discussing case study research emphasize one particular variation of case study research only. The current paper provides an overview of the various uses of case study research in the information systems field by describing the different ways in which case study research can be used, using examples from published IS literature for illustration, and providing references to other method papers for more detailed discussion of each alternative. Researchers are reminded that case study research can be used in the positivist and interpretivist traditions, for testing or building theory, with a single or multiple case study design, using qualitative or mixed methods. The range of case study research alternatives makes it a highly versatile research strategy for IS

Rigor in information systems positivist case research: current practices, trends, and recommendations

TL;DR: The level of methodological rigor in positivist IS case research conducted over the past decade has experienced modest progress with respect to some specific attributes but the overall assessed rigor is somewhat equivocal and there are still significant areas for improvement.

Successfully completing case study research: combining rigour, relevance and pragmatism

TL;DR: The paper focuses on the pragmatics of conducting case study research, and draws from the discussion at a panel session conducted by the authors at the 8th Australasian Conference on Information Systems, September 1997, from the authors' practical experiences, and from the case studyResearch literature.

Research Paradigms and Meaning Making: A Primer

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors introduce the concept of meaning making in research methods and look at how meaning is generated from qualitative data analysis specifically, and some examples from the literature of how meaning can be constructed and organized using a qualitative Data Analysis approach are provided.

Qualitative case studies in operations management: Trends, research outcomes, and future research implications

TL;DR: In many of the qualitative case studies reviewed, sufficient details in research design, data collection, and data analysis were missing and there was a lack of consistency in the way the case method has been applied.

Decision Support Systems Failure An Evolutionary Perspective.

TL;DR: This paper reports on the intensive investigation of a single DSS project in a manufacturing company and identifies a series of factors or processes that can interfere with Keen’s adaptive loops; these factors evolutionary disruptors are called.

Building theories from case study research

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe the process of inducting theory using case studies from specifying the research questions to reaching closure, which is a process similar to hypothesis-testing research.

The Discovery of Grounded Theory

TL;DR: In this paper, the discovery of grounded theory is discussed and grounded theory can be found in the form of a grounded theory discovery problem, where the root cause of the problem is identified.

Grounded Theory Research: Procedures, Canons and Evaluative Criteria

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examine three methodological questions that are generally applicable to all qualitative methods: how should the usual scientific canons be reinterpreted for qualitative research? How should researchers report the procedures and canons used in their research? What evaluative criteria should be used in judging the research products?

TL;DR: The Soft Systems Methodology (SSM) as discussed by the authors is an alternative approach which enables managers of all kinds and at any level to deal with the subtleties and confusions of the situations they face.

Mixing Qualitative and Quantitative Methods: Triangulation in Action @

TL;DR: There is a distinct tradition in the literature on social science research methods that advocates the use of multiple methods as mentioned in this paper, which is usually described as one of convergent methodology, multimethod/multitrait (Campbell and Fiske, 1959), convergent validation or, what has been called "triangulation".
