Studies were made of homogeneous polymerization of butadiene and isoprene under the effect of soluble catalytic systems prepared using Co(AlCl 4 ) 2 . It was shown that the structure of polyisoprene formed in these processes is practically independent of both the type and concentration of the co-catalytic additive and the content of the monomer. A mechanism is proposed for the formation of various structures in the polydiene chain which is based on concepts of anti-syn -isomerization of the active centre of polymerization.

Problems of the polymerization mechanism of diene hydrocarbons in the presence of cobalt catalysts

The relative reactivities of dienes and styrene in free anion systems are examined. The mechanism of stereoregulation in polymerization of dienes under the influence of anionic systems is discussed. The nature of the active centres and the degree of stereospecific control in polymerization of dienes catalysed by organometallic compounds of Ti 4+ , Cr 3+ and Ni 2+ are studied. The prospects in the use of individual organometallic compounds of the transition metals in stereospecific catalysis are discussed. Possible mechanisms of stereoregulation in polymerization of dienes catalysed by compounds of transition metals are discussed on the basis of experimental evidence. An experimental basis is presented for a chain mechanism of ring opening of cycloolefins and of the role of carbene complexes as active centres in the chain reaction.
