TLDR
In this paper , the authors discuss typical changes in the circadian regulation of sleep with aging; how age influences the prevalence, diagnosis, and treatment of circadian rhythm sleep disorders; and how neurologic diseases in older patient impact circadian rhythms and sleep.About:

Journal ArticleDOI
Treatment of Circadian Rhythm Sleep–Wake Disorders
TL;DR: The most common clinical manifestations are insomnia and excessive daytime sleepiness that often lead to clinically meaningful distress or cause mental, physical, social, occupational, educational, or other functional impairment as discussed by the authors .
Journal ArticleDOI
Rhythms in barriers and fluids: Circadian clock regulation in the aging neurovascular unit
TL;DR: In this article , the authors highlight chaperone-mediated autophagy as one mechanism at the intersection of circadian dysregulation, aging and neurodegenerative disease, and emphasize key areas for future research.
Book ChapterDOI
How can light be used to optimize sleep and health in older adults?
TL;DR: In this article , the authors examined whether bright light treatment could be used to optimize sleep, circadian rhythms, and health in older adults, and outlined a range of methodological considerations which need to be addressed to increase the feasibility, acceptability and effectiveness of light treatment in adults.
Journal ArticleDOI
Brain washing and neural health: role of age, sleep, and the cerebrospinal fluid melatonin rhythm

Journal ArticleDOI
Effects of polyphenol-rich interventions on sleep disorders: A systematic review and meta-analysis
TL;DR: In this paper , the effects of polyphenol-rich interventions on sleep disorders were compared with placebo and polyphenols in patients with sleep disorders, and the results showed that polyphenolic treatment significantly reduced sleep onset latency and increased sleep time.

Sleep Drives Metabolite Clearance From the Adult Brain
Lulu Xie,Hongyi Kang,Qiwu Xu,Michael Chen,Yonghong Liao,Meenakshisundaram Thiyagarajan,John O’Donnell,Daniel J. Christensen,Charles Nicholson,Jeffrey J. Iliff,Takahiro Takano,Rashid Deane +11 more
TL;DR: It is reported that sleep has a critical function in ensuring metabolic homeostasis and convective fluxes of interstitial fluid increased the rate of β-amyloid clearance during sleep, suggesting the restorative function of sleep may be a consequence of the enhanced removal of potentially neurotoxic waste products that accumulate in the awake central nervous system.
Journal ArticleDOI
The mammalian circadian timing system: organization and coordination of central and peripheral clocks.
TL;DR: This work discusses knowledge acquired during the past few years on the complex structure and function of the mammalian circadian timing system and some of the SCN output pathways serve as input pathways for peripheral tissues.
Journal ArticleDOI
Molecular components of the mammalian circadian clock
TL;DR: The general mechanisms of the circadian clockwork are reviewed, recent findings that elucidate tissue-specific expression patterns of the clock genes are described and the importance of circadian regulation in peripheral tissues for an organism's overall well-being is addressed.
Journal ArticleDOI
Sleep complaints among elderly persons: an epidemiologic study of three communities.
Daniel J. Foley,Andrew A. Monjan,Brown Sl,Eleanor M. Simonsick,Robert B. Wallace,Dan G. Blazer +5 more
TL;DR: In multivariate analyses, sleep complaints were associated with an increasing number of respiratory symptoms, physical disabilities, nonprescription medications, depressive symptoms and poorer self-perceived health.
Journal ArticleDOI
Contribution of the circadian pacemaker and the sleep homeostat to sleep propensity, sleep structure, electroencephalographic slow waves, and sleep spindle activity in humans
TL;DR: Analyses of the (nonadditive) interaction of the circadian and sleep-dependent components of sleep propensity and sleep structure revealed that the phase relation between the sleep-wake cycle and the circadian pacemaker during entrainment promotes the consolidation of sleep and wakefulness and facilitates the transitions between these vigilance states.
