TLDR
In this article, the authors examined the ability of monkey arterial smooth muscle cells (SMC) to synthesize collagen in each of these conditions in culture and found that they synthesize the same amount of collagen/cell in 5% whole blood serum (MBS) during the early phase of rapid proliferation as during slow growth in later phases in culture.

Replication of smooth muscle cells in vascular disease.

TL;DR: This review attempts to consider the current state of knowledge of the mechanisms controlling smooth muscle proliferation in these two diseases, to put that knowledge into the context of what is known about smooth muscle biology, and to offer two hypotheses on the possible roles of smooth muscle developmental biology in manifestations of atherosclerosis and hypertension in adult humans.

The platelet-derived growth factor

TL;DR: It is likely that PDGF is released from platelets at sites of vascular damage and that it contributes toward the cell proliferation and connective tissue formation seen in healing wounds and in arteriosclerotic lesions.

Cytokines and growth factors positively and negatively regulate interstitial collagen gene expression in human vascular smooth muscle cells.

TL;DR: Locally produced cytokines and growth factors may modify matrix accumulation during atherogenesis by stimulating or suppressing expression of interstitial collagen mRNA and protein by VSMCs.

Developmentally regulated production of platelet-derived growth factor-like molecules

TL;DR: Production of PDGF-c appears to be developmentally regulated and may be a factor in the more rapid proliferation of aortic smooth muscle cells and synthesis of connective tissue components which occurs during growth of the aorta in vivo.

The smooth muscle cell. II. Growth of smooth muscle in culture and formation of elastic fibers.

TL;DR: Investigations of the morphology of smooth muscle derived from the inner media and intima of immature guinea pig aorta and radioautographic observations of the ability of aortic smooth muscle to synthesize and secrete extracellular proteins demonstrate that this cell is a connective tissue synthetic cell.

Homocystine-induced arteriosclerosis. The role of endothelial cell injury and platelet response in its genesis.

TL;DR: It is concluded that homocystine-induced endothelial cell injury resulted in arteriosclerosis through platelet-mediated intimal proliferation of smooth muscle cells that can be prevented by drug-induced platelet dysfunction.
