TLDR
In this paper, a four-step model called "design for construction" (DFC) has been developed to capture and use production experience from similar previous projects to improve constructability without risking customer values.
Abstract
The design process has a significant impact on the performance and profitability of a housing project. Therefore, decisions made during the design process should take into consideration knowledge and experience from other processes in previously accomplished projects, specifically from the production phase. How to capture and use production experience in housing has not gained enough interest, possibly leading to sub-optimal improvements during the construction process. This motivates research on how onsite production experience from similar previous projects can be captured and used to improve constructability without risking customer values. Based on the concept of constructability, ‘design for manufacturing and assembly’ and the theory of waste, the method ‘design for construction’ (DFC) has been developed. The four-step model complements the conventional construction process, and consists of the following steps: (1) specify customer values and similar previous projects; (2) identify onsite waste and c...

How Lack of Knowledge and Tools Hinders the Eco-Design of Buildings—A Systematic Review

TL;DR: Two specific tools were identified that allow the inclusion of environmental consideration in building design, along with nine design strategies providing qualitative guidance on how to potentially minimize energy and material consumption, as well as waste generation.

Improving Buildabuility With Platforms and Configurators

TL;DR: The different stages in construction projects are often separated with little interaction between the different trades as discussed by the authors, and many researchers proclaim that this separation between design and production is the cause of the lack of interaction between different trades.

A mixed method for measuring incompatibilities between manufacturing approaches and off-site construction

TL;DR: In this article, a combination of quantitative and qualitative mixed methods was explored through a literature-based case study of prefabricated houses and cars, nine real-life projects built by the second author's research team and the first-named author's practical experiences of leading these projects, based on a logic framework derived from the authors' reflections of their architectural practices.
