Abstract
The authors describe an emerging paradigm of educational research that pairs theories of embodied learning with a class of immersive technologies referred to as mixed reality (MR). MR environments merge the digital with the physical, where, for example, students can use their bodies to simulate an orbit around a virtual planet. Recent research supports the idea that body activity can be an important catalyst for generating learning, and new technologies are being developed that use natural human physicality and gesture as input. However, existing research on embodied learning technologies has been disparate, driven largely by specific technical innovations and constraints, and often lacking a clear focus on establishing their efficacy in educational contexts. On the basis of the unique characteristics of these technologies and on their own experiences conducting research in this area, the authors put forth six precepts for embodied learning technology researchers that pertain to the rationale, design, and...

Design Principles for Educational Mixed Reality?: Adaptions of the Design Recommendations of Multimedia Learning

TL;DR: This chapter reviews existing guidelines for mixed reality education and categorizes them into principles related to the perception of information and the related essential information processing and principles aiming at promoting generative learning (activating principles), translated to MR-learning environments.

Maria Montessori and Embodied Education: current proposal in preschool education

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a review of existing literature focusing on body and movement, but connected with cognitive, emotional and well-being aspects, which are critical in preschool education, both for educators/teachers, and for school reform policies.

Embodied Action Scaffolds Dialogic Reading

TL;DR: This article found that embodied action in conjunction with dialogic reading provides an effective model for promoting early literacy skills, and that embodied actions increased story recall, vocabulary acquisition, and positive affect with generally large effect sizes.

Learning About Viruses: Representing Covid-19

TL;DR: In this paper , the relative benefits and limitations of different forms for learning about the underlying biology of Covid-19 were analyzed using an embodied learning lens, where pictures, 3D models, gestures, dynamic visualisations, interactive representations, and extended reality identified through a state-of-the-art review.

How the body shapes the mind

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigate the origins of the notion of EMBODIMENT and explore the connections between physics, philosophy, and pathology, focusing on pseudoscience.
