Abstract
The authors describe an emerging paradigm of educational research that pairs theories of embodied learning with a class of immersive technologies referred to as mixed reality (MR). MR environments merge the digital with the physical, where, for example, students can use their bodies to simulate an orbit around a virtual planet. Recent research supports the idea that body activity can be an important catalyst for generating learning, and new technologies are being developed that use natural human physicality and gesture as input. However, existing research on embodied learning technologies has been disparate, driven largely by specific technical innovations and constraints, and often lacking a clear focus on establishing their efficacy in educational contexts. On the basis of the unique characteristics of these technologies and on their own experiences conducting research in this area, the authors put forth six precepts for embodied learning technology researchers that pertain to the rationale, design, and...

Supporting Spatial Skill Learning with Gesture-Based Embodied Design

TL;DR: A series of gesture sets derived from an iterative design approach that are easy for children to acquire, show sufficient congruency to specific spatial operations, and enable robust recognition from the system are presented.

Dall’Embodied Cognition all’Embodied Education nelle scienze dell’attività motoria e sportiva

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors underline the intrinsically embodied essence of motor activity, game and sport, and the educational strategies that enhance the body as a subject that creates cognition through the interaction with the environment-objects- persons, in the concrete situation experienced by the subject.

Embodied Interaction and Spatial Skills: A Systematic Review of Empirical Studies

TL;DR: This work provides a systematic review of empirical studies focused on embodied interaction and spatial skills and identifies embodied interaction capacities found in the literature review that help to enhance and develop spatial skills.

Designing for a socioenactive experience: A case study in an educational workshop on deep time

TL;DR: The enactivism-inspired perspective to cognition is drawn, to make explicit the social-physical-digital tripartite articulation into design considerations, and to suggest lines to be weaved in design towards (smart) contemporary technology-based environments.

Metaphors We Live by

TL;DR: Lakoff and Johnson as discussed by the authors present a very attractive book for linguists to read, which is written in a direct and accessible style; while it introduces and uses a number of new terms, for the most part it is free of jargon.

A Taxonomy of Mixed Reality Visual Displays

TL;DR: Paul Milgram's research interests include display and control issues in telerobotics and virtual environments, stereoscopic video and computer graphics, cognitive engineering, and human factors issues in medicine.

Six views of embodied cognition.

TL;DR: The sixth claim has received the least attention in the literature on embodied cognition, but it may in fact be the best documented and most powerful of the six claims.

How the body shapes the mind

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigate the origins of the notion of EMBODIMENT and explore the connections between physics, philosophy, and pathology, focusing on pseudoscience.
