Exotic light dynamics around an exceptional point of order four associated with three connecting second-order exceptional points
TLDR
In this article, the mutual interactions among four coupled states around a fourth-order singularity in a physical system is explored, and an exclusive chiral light dynamic following the dynamical variation of the gain-loss profile is reported for the first time.Abstract:
The physics of exceptional point (EP) singularities has been a key to a wide range of unique physical applications in open systems. In this context, the mutual interactions among four coupled states around a fourth-order EP (EP4) in a physical system is yet to be explored. Here we investigate the unique features of an EP4 in a fabrication feasible planar optical waveguide with a multilayer gain-loss profile based on only two tunable parameters. Following a quasistatic gain-loss around the embedded EP4, a unique fourth-order successive switching phenomenon among the propagation constants (β values) of four coupled modes has been explored. An exclusive chiral light dynamic following the dynamical variation of the gain-loss profile has been reported for the first time, which enables a special type of asymmetric higher-order mode conversion scheme. Here all the coupled modes associated with an EP4 are fully converted into different specific higher-order modes based on the choice of encirclement directions. The proposed scheme would present EP4 as a new light manipulation tool for integrated photonic devices.read more

Signatures of Liouvillian exceptional points in a quantum thermal machine.
TL;DR: In this article, the spectrum of a non-Hermitian Liouvillian for an arbitrary initial state of a quantum thermal machine is derived for a given initial state, and a regime of critical decay for the thermal machine towards its steady state is shown to correspond to a critical damped harmonic oscillator.

Exceptional points in optics and photonics.
TL;DR: The topic of exceptional points in photonics is reviewed and some of the possible exotic behavior that might be expected from engineering such systems are explored, as well as new angle of utilizing gain and loss as new degrees of freedom, in stark contrast with the traditional approach of avoiding these elements.

TL;DR: Higher-order exceptional points are observed in a coupled cavity arrangement—specifically, a ternary, parity–time-symmetric photonic laser molecule—with a carefully tailored gain–loss distribution and it is found that the frequency response follows a cube-root dependence on induced perturbations in the refractive index.

PT-symmetry breaking and laser-absorber modes in optical scattering systems.
TL;DR: Using a scattering matrix formalism, the general scattering properties of optical structures that are symmetric under a combination of parity and time reversal (PT) are derived and a transition between PT-symmetric scattering eigenstates, which are norm preserving, and symmetry-broken pairs of eigenstate exhibiting net amplification and loss is demonstrated.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that a dynamical encircling of an exceptional point is analogous to the scattering through a two-mode waveguide with suitably designed boundaries and losses, and mode transitions are induced that transform this device into a robust and asymmetric switch between different waveguide modes.

Topological energy transfer in an optomechanical system with exceptional points
TL;DR: This work demonstrates the transfer of energy between two vibrational modes of a cryogenic optomechanical device using topological operations and shows that this transfer arises from the presence of an exceptional point in the spectrum of the device, which is non-reciprocal.
