The correlation between certain pre-existing patterns of cartilage histology and susceptibility to degenerative change may provide a clue to the localization of degenerative joint disease in humans.
Abstract
Intraarticular injections of triamcinolone acetonide resulted in deleterious changes in living rabbit articular knee cartilage. These changes were characterized by an increased frequency of chondrocyte nuclear degeneration and prominent cyst formation as compared with control animals. Degenerative changes were localized to the cartilage of the medial tibial plateau. This localization may be related to the different histologic pattern seen in this cartilage surface as compared to other areas of the knee. The correlation between certain pre-existing patterns of cartilage histology and susceptibility to degenerative change may provide a clue to the localization of degenerative joint disease in humans.

The effect of drugs used in the treatment of osteoarthrosis on stromelysin (proteoglycanase) of equine synovial cell origin.

TL;DR: There is increasing evidence that the proteoglycan-degrading neutral metalloproteinase, stromelysin, is a key enzyme in the pathogenesis of osteoarthrosis and PSGAG possessed inhibitory activity at concentrations likely to be achieved therapeutically in the equine fetlock joint.

The influence of osteoporosis on varus osteoarthritis of the knee

TL;DR: It is suggested that a low BMD predisposes to trabecular microfractures and consequently increased stress on the articular cartilage and does not preclude osteoarthritic change in the knee.

The effects of methylprednisolone on normal and monocyte-conditioned medium-treated articular cartilage from dogs and horses.

TL;DR: Proteoglycan synthesis in normal equine articular cartilage was severely depressed by 10 mg/mL MPS for 24 hours, and proteogly can synthesis failed to recover after 13 days of culture in medium without MPS, and the long-term effect of corticosteroid treatment on proteoglycan metabolism was studied in normal explants.

Intra-articular steroids after arthroscopy for osteoarthritis of the knee

TL;DR: It is questioned whether it is still reasonable to supplement an arthroscopic lavage or debridement operation with an intraarticular injection of steroid, and are there increased risks of developing septic arthritis in these circumstances.

Morphological Investigation of Osteochondrosis Induced by Ofloxacin in Rats

TL;DR: Oral doses of 300 or 900 mg/kg/day of ofloxacin, a quinolone antibacterial agent, for 8 weeks induced a high incidence osteochondrotic lesions in rats, which was different in developmental process from the spontaneous osteochondrosis of rats.

The acute effects of intra-articular hydrocortisone on articular cartilage in rabbits.

TL;DR: The effect of intra-articularly administered hydrocortisone acetate in doses of 0.16 and 1.6 milligrams per kilogram on the incorporation of glycine-H3 into articular cartilage of rabbits is demonstrated.

Hypercoagulability of the blood associated with ACTH and cortisone therapy.

TL;DR: Changes have been observed in the venous clotting time and the heparin-retarded venous clots time which indicate that ACTH and cortisone frequently produce a hypercoagulable state of blood coagulation.

Inflammatory reaction after intrasynovial injection of microcrystalline adrenocorticosteroid esters.

TL;DR: Injection of commercially available microcrystalline adrenocorticosteroid esters into normal canine joints was ac-companied by a leukocyte-rich exudative response, roughly proportional to the dose injected, and no tenderness or evidence of pain was noted.

Steroid therapy and vascular lesions in rheumatoid arthritis

TL;DR: The clinical manifestations and pathology of diffuse vascular lesions, occurring in three patients with rheumatoid arthritis, are described and the possible significance of such lesions including their apparent relationship to corticosteroid therapy is discussed in detail.

Charcot's arthropathy following intra-articular hydrocortisone.

TL;DR: This paper aims to provide a history of the field of comparative medicine in India and some of the techniques used, as well as some new ideas, that have been developed since the publication of this work in 2012.
