TLDR
The positive expression in cultured pineal cells demonstrates the capacity of this gland to synthesize somatostatin in denervated cells, apart from the neural origin of pineal som atostatin, which has been described in detail in the bovine species.Abstract:
The expression of somatostatin mRNA was investigated in rat pineal cells after 1 week in culture, using reverse transcription of mRNA into cDNA and the polymerase chain reaction. The positive expression in cultured pineal cells demonstrates the capacity of this gland to synthesize somatostatin in denervated cells. Thus, apart from the neural origin of pineal somatostatin, which has been described in detail in the bovine species, a parenchymal source is demonstrated.read more

Generation of the Melatonin Endocrine Message in Mammals: A Review of the Complex Regulation of Melatonin Synthesis by Norepinephrine, Peptides, and Other Pineal Transmitters
TL;DR: The aim of this review is to gather together early and recent data on the effects of the nonadrenergic transmitters on modulation of melatonin synthesis, which reveals the variety of inputs that can be integrated by the pineal gland; what elements are crucial to deliver the very precise timing information to the organism.

Somatostatin and somatostatin receptor subtype gene expression in medullary thyroid carcinoma.

TL;DR: The presence of different combinations of SSTR subtypes in a given patient may explain the variable clinical response to SRIF analogues and may promote the search for more selective drugs with different affinities to the various receptor subtypes.

Somatostatin Is Expressed in FRTL-5 Thyroid Cells and Prevents Thyrotropin-Mediated Down-Regulation of the Cyclin-Dependent Kinase Inhibitor p27kip11
TL;DR: The results demonstrate the participation of an autocrine loop in the control of thyroid cell proliferation, and the possibility that this mechanism could be altered in the process of thyroid carcinogenesis.

Pineal gene expression: dawn in a dark matter.
TL;DR: In this paper, the pineal gland serves as a neuroendocrine interface to convert environmental lighting conditions into a humoral message, the nocturnally elevated synthesis of melatonin.

Developmental potency of cultured pineal cells: an approach to pineal developmental biology.
TL;DR: Cell culture studies on developing rat and quail pineal organs reveal that the developing pineal organ is a unique and useful model system for developmental neurobiology and that cell culture techniques offer a powerful tool for the understanding of development and cell differentiation of this particular organ.

Isolation, characterization, and DNA sequence of the rat somatostatin gene.
TL;DR: Analysis of rat DNA suggests that there may be restriction-site polymorphisms in or near the gene or that additional somatostatin-hybridizing sequences may exist in the genome.

Cyclic AMP regulates somatostatin mRNA accumulation in primary diencephalic cultures and in transfected fibroblast cells.
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that somatostatin mRNA accumulation can be regulated through a cAMP-dependent pathway, that this pathway is operative in heterologous cells transfected with the somatstatin gene, and that stimulation of som atostatin secretion and mRNA accumulationcan be uncoupled from one another.
