TLDR
The presence of both direction and speed selectivity in MT of the macaque suggests that this area is more specialized for the analysis of visual motion than has been previously recognized.Abstract:
1. Recordings were made from single units in the middle temporal visual area (MT) of anesthetized, paralyzed macaque monkeys. A computer-driven stimulator was used to make quantitative tests of sel...read more

Real world occlusion constraints and binocular rivalry
Shinsuke Shimojo,Ken Nakayama +1 more
TL;DR: Since explicit eye-of-origin information is lost relatively early in the hierarchical organization of cortical visual processing, it is argued that occlusion-related constraints must be embodied at such early levels.

Disambiguating Visual Motion Through Contextual Feedback Modulation
Pierre Bayerl,Heiko Neumann +1 more
TL;DR: This work proposes a new model of V1-MT feedforward and feedback processing in which localized V1 motion signals are integrated along the feedforward path by model MT cells and serves as a means to link physiological mechanisms with perceptual behavior.

Signals Conveyed in the Pulvinar Pathway from Superior Colliculus to Cortical Area MT
TL;DR: The identification of this pathway and its transmitted activity establishes the first functional pathway from brainstem to cortex through pulvinar and makes it possible to examine its contribution to cortical visual processing, perception, and action.

Neural correlates of implied motion
Bart Krekelberg,Sabine Dannenberg,Klaus-Peter Hoffmann,Frank Bremmer,Frank Bremmer,John Ross +5 more
TL;DR: It is shown that cells in the prototypical motion areas in the dorsal visual cortex process form that implies motion, and that when motion signals conflict with form signals suggesting a different path of motion, both humans and monkeys perceive motion in a compromised direction.

Middle temporal visual area microstimulation influences veridical judgments of motion direction.
TL;DR: Three new findings are reported: (1) MT neurons with widely disparate preferred directions can cooperate to shape direction estimates, inconsistent with a pure “winner- take-all” read-out algorithm and consistent with a distributed coding scheme like vector averaging, whereas neurons with nearly opposite preferred directions seem to compete in a manner consistent with the winner-take-all hypothesis.

Receptive fields and functional architecture of monkey striate cortex
David H. Hubel,Torsten N. Wiesel +1 more
TL;DR: The striate cortex was studied in lightly anaesthetized macaque and spider monkeys by recording extracellularly from single units and stimulating the retinas with spots or patterns of light, with response properties very similar to those previously described in the cat.

Silver Staining of Myelin by Means of Physical Development
TL;DR: For staining myelin with silver a physical development technique has been devised that can render visible the thinnest fibers in various animal species, including fishes and reptiles, even in the early phase of myelination and may be applied to both frozen and embedded materials.
