Functional properties of neurons in middle temporal visual area of the macaque monkey. I. Selectivity for stimulus direction, speed, and orientation

TLDR
The presence of both direction and speed selectivity in MT of the macaque suggests that this area is more specialized for the analysis of visual motion than has been previously recognized.
Abstract
1. Recordings were made from single units in the middle temporal visual area (MT) of anesthetized, paralyzed macaque monkeys. A computer-driven stimulator was used to make quantitative tests of sel...

Spiral mechanisms are required to account for summation of complex motion components.

TL;DR: It is concluded that the detection of complex motion in human vision requires both cardinal and spiral mechanisms with a half-bandwidth of approximately 46 degrees.

Convergence of unimodal and polymodal sensory input to the entorhinal cortex in the fascicularis monkey

TL;DR: It is suggested that unimodal and polymodal association cortical inputs converge in the lateral EC, thereby providing the possibility for the integration of complex stimuli for internal representations in declarative memory elaboration.

Optimal decision making on the basis of evidence represented in spike trains

TL;DR: This article makes a more realistic assumption that sensory evidence is represented in spike trains described by the Poisson processes, which naturally satisfy the mean-variance relationship observed in sensory neurons and shows that for such a representation, the neural circuits involving cortical integrators and basal ganglia can approximate the optimal decision procedures for two and multiple alternative choice tasks.

Stereoscopic Depth Cues Can Segment Motion Information

TL;DR: Stereo disparity can be used as a segmentation cue by the motion system if all the signal elements had a disparity different from that of the noise elements.

Function of center-surround antagonism for motion in visual area MT/V5: a modeling study

TL;DR: The results indicate an almost perfect dichotomy between both functionalities: the authors' model neurons code for the object's edge if present, and for the first-order shape otherwise, and it is shown that small populations of model neurons can code linearly for the orientation-in-depth of translating planes.

Receptive fields and functional architecture of monkey striate cortex

TL;DR: The striate cortex was studied in lightly anaesthetized macaque and spider monkeys by recording extracellularly from single units and stimulating the retinas with spots or patterns of light, with response properties very similar to those previously described in the cat.

Silver Staining of Myelin by Means of Physical Development

TL;DR: For staining myelin with silver a physical development technique has been devised that can render visible the thinnest fibers in various animal species, including fishes and reptiles, even in the early phase of myelination and may be applied to both frozen and embedded materials.
