TLDR
The presence of both direction and speed selectivity in MT of the macaque suggests that this area is more specialized for the analysis of visual motion than has been previously recognized.Abstract:
1. Recordings were made from single units in the middle temporal visual area (MT) of anesthetized, paralyzed macaque monkeys. A computer-driven stimulator was used to make quantitative tests of sel...read more

Speed tuning of motion segmentation and discrimination.
TL;DR: This work examined speed-based segmentation by measuring the speed difference above which observers can perceive two moving surfaces, and found that it increases sharply for speeds above approximately 8 degrees/s, and speed-segmentation thresholds decrease with stimulus duration out to approximately 200 ms.

Ghosts in machine learning for cognitive neuroscience: Moving from data to theory.
Thomas A. Carlson,Thomas A. Carlson,Erin Goddard,Erin Goddard,David M. Kaplan,Colin Klein,J. Brendan Ritchie +6 more
TL;DR: A philosophical framework for thinking about applications of machine learning to cognitive neuroscience datasets is provided, and three ghosts are described, which place limits on the interpretability of decoding research in cognitive neuroscience.

Smooth Pursuit Eye Movements to Isoluminant Targets
Doris I. Braun,Neil Mennie,Christoph Rasche,Alexander C. Schütz,Michael J. Hawken,Karl R. Gegenfurtner +5 more
TL;DR: Parallel psychophysical experiments revealed that different from speed judgments of moving isoluminant stimuli made during fixation, judgments during pursuit are veridical for the same stimuli at all speeds, therefore information about target speed seems to be available for pursuit eye movements and speed judgment during pursuit but is degraded for perceptual speed judgments.

Topographic organization of areas V3 and V4 and its relation to supra-areal organization of the primate visual system.
Michael J. Arcaro,Sabine Kastner +1 more
TL;DR: It is proposed that V3 and V4 play a critical role in this supra-areal organization of early visual cortex by filtering information about the visual environment along parallel pathways across higher-order cortex.

Target dependence of orientation and direction selectivity of corticocortical projection neurons in the mouse V1.
Teppei Matsui,Kenichi Ohki +1 more
TL;DR: In vivo two photon calcium imaging in the mouse visual cortex is used to investigate whether sharpness of orientation and direction selectivity and optimal spatial and temporal frequency of projection neurons from V1 to higher order visual areas match with that of target areas.

Receptive fields and functional architecture of monkey striate cortex
David H. Hubel,Torsten N. Wiesel +1 more
TL;DR: The striate cortex was studied in lightly anaesthetized macaque and spider monkeys by recording extracellularly from single units and stimulating the retinas with spots or patterns of light, with response properties very similar to those previously described in the cat.

Silver Staining of Myelin by Means of Physical Development
TL;DR: For staining myelin with silver a physical development technique has been devised that can render visible the thinnest fibers in various animal species, including fishes and reptiles, even in the early phase of myelination and may be applied to both frozen and embedded materials.
