Abstract
Although the studies on pressure surge in elbow draft tubes of Francis turbines have been carried out by many researchers, pressure fluctuations associated with the unstable behavior of the cavitated vortex rope in the tube are still unclarified, and further understanding of their occurrence is required. In this paper, the author demonstrate the experimental results of the pressure fluctuations with irregular nature, which are induced by the vortex rope in an elbow draft tube having a longer inlet once. The spectrum method was used to analyze the fluctuating wall-pressures measured at both inlet cone and elbow sections of the draft tube. A high speed video system was also employed for observing the behavior of the cavitated vortex rope. From the experiment, three types of pressure fluctuations with different dominant frequencies were found out, and the mechanism of draft-tube-surging was explained reasonable based on the relationships among those pressure fluctuations.

Hydroacoustic modelling and numerical simulation of unsteady operation of hydroelectric systems

TL;DR: In this article, a model of an elementary pipe is derived from the governing equations, i.e. momentum and continuity equations, and the use of appropriate numerical schemes leads to a discrete model of the pipe consisting of a T-shaped equivalent electrical circuit.

Tiny bubbles challenge giant turbines: Three Gorges puzzle.

TL;DR: From a multi-disciplinary analysis, this Three Gorges puzzle could reflect an unknown type of cavitation inception presumably triggered by turbulence production from the boundary-layer streak transitional process, which presents a fresh challenge not only to this old turbine industry, but also to the fundamental sciences.

Experimental Study and Numerical Simulation of Cavity Oscillation in a Conical Diffuser

TL;DR: Based on the one-dimensional stability analysis, the self-excited oscillation in hydraulic power generating systems was studied by a simple experiment and numerical simulation in this paper, where it was shown that a cavity in a conical diffuser can cause surge.
