Journal ArticleDOI

Bacterial gene transfer by natural genetic transformation in the environment.

TL;DR: The current understanding of the biology of transformation is summarized to provide the platform on which aspects of bacterial transformation in water, soil, and sediments and the habitat of pathogens are discussed.
Journal ArticleDOI

Interference of humic acids and DNA extracted directly from soil in detection and transformation of recombinant DNA from bacteria and a yeast

TL;DR: A two-step protocol for the extraction and purification of total DNA from soil samples was developed and high inhibitory susceptibilities for humic acids were observed with Taq polymerase.
Journal ArticleDOI

Molecular mechanisms of genetic adaptation to xenobiotic compounds.

TL;DR: In this article, a range of genetic mechanisms, such as gene transfer, mutational drift, and genetic recombination and transposition, can accelerate the evolution of catabolic pathways in bacteria.
Journal ArticleDOI

Bacterial antibiotic resistance levels in Danish farmland as a result of treatment with pig manure slurry.

TL;DR: Results obtained in this study indicate that tetracycline resistance levels in soil are temporarily influenced by the addition of pig manure slurry, and also that increased amount of pigmanure slurry amendment may result in increased levels of tetrACYcline resistant bacteria in the soil.

New Selective Media for Enumeration and Recovery of Fluorescent Pseudomonads from Various Habitats

TL;DR: New media (S1 and S2) were formulated that provide a high degree of selectivity and detection of fluorescent pseudomonads on initial plating that consistently recovered high percentages of fluorescent phenotypes in soils in which fluorescent Pseudomonads represent a small proportion of the total population.
Journal ArticleDOI

Activity, ecology, and population dynamics of microorganisms in soil.

TL;DR: In this paper, activity, ecology, and population dynamics of Microorganisms in Soil are discussed, and the authors propose a method to detect the presence of microorganisms in the soil.
Journal ArticleDOI

Plasmid Involvement in Parathion Hydrolysis by Pseudomonas diminuta

TL;DR: An organism identified as Pseudomonas diminuta was found to hydrolyze parathion and hydrolase-negative derivatives were missing a plasmid present in the wild-type organism.
Journal ArticleDOI

Bacterial conjugation between pseudomonads in the rhizosphere of wheat

TL;DR: Transfer of plasmid RP4 between introduced pseudomonads was studied in rhizosphere and non-rhizosphere soil of wheat, in soil chambers and in culture tubes, indicating an influence of the experimental set-up.
