Improvement and impairment of visually guided behavior through LTP- and LTD-like exposure-based visual learning.

TLDR
The data demonstrate that instead of electrically stimulating synapses, selective behavioral changes are evoked in humans by using equivalently timed visual stimulation, suggesting that both LTD- and LTP-like protocols control human behavior but that the direction of changes is determined by the feature incorporated into the stimulation protocol.

Beneficial Microorganisms for Corals (BMC): Proposed Mechanisms for Coral Health and Resilience

TL;DR: The term BMC (Beneficial Microorganisms for Corals) is proposed to define (specific) symbionts that promote coral health and the potential mechanisms of the effects of BMC on corals are proposed, suggesting strategies for the use of this knowledge to manipulate the microbiome, reversing dysbiosis to restore and protect coral reefs.

Perceptual learning: toward a comprehensive theory.

TL;DR: A dual plasticity model is proposed in which feature-based plasticity is a change in a representation of the learned feature, and task-based Plasticity isA change in processing of the trained task.
Journal ArticleDOI

The influence of acute stress on attention mechanisms and its electrophysiological correlates.

TL;DR: The conclusion is drawn that acute stress impairs the intention-based attentional allocation and enhances the stimulus-driven selection, leading to a strong distractibility during attentional information selection.

State-dependencies of learning across brain scales

TL;DR: Known mechanisms of how brain states mediate and modulate learning by their characteristic rhythmic signatures are reviewed and new avenues for utilizing neuronal learning mechanisms in developing tools and therapies are illuminated.

Obligatory Role for the Immediate Early Gene NARP in Critical Period Plasticity

TL;DR: The number and strength of inhibitory synaptic contacts from FS (PV) INs onto principle neurons in the visual cortex is normal in NARP(-/-) mice, and enhancement of this output recovers the expression of experience-dependent synaptic plasticity.

Neural Mechanisms of Selective Visual Attention

TL;DR: The two basic phenomena that define the problem of visual attention can be illustrated in a simple example and selectivity-the ability to filter out un wanted information is illustrated.

Long-lasting potentiation of synaptic transmission in the dentate area of the anaesthetized rabbit following stimulation of the perforant path.

TL;DR: The after‐effects of repetitive stimulation of the perforant path fibres to the dentate area of the hippocampal formation have been examined with extracellular micro‐electrodes in rabbits anaesthetized with urethane.

LTP and LTD: an embarrassment of riches.

TL;DR: This work reviews those forms of LTP and LTD for which mechanisms have been most firmly established and examples are provided that show how these mechanisms can contribute to experience-dependent modifications of brain function.

Homosynaptic long-term depression in area CA1 of hippocampus and effects of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor blockade.

TL;DR: The data suggest that synaptic depression can be triggered by prolonged NMDA receptor activation that is below the threshold for inducing synaptic potentiation, and it is proposed that this mechanism is important for the modifications of hippocampal response properties that underlie some forms of learning and memory.

The Normalization Model of Attention

TL;DR: A model of attention is described that exhibits each of these different forms of attentional modulation, depending on the stimulus conditions and the spread of the attention field in the model, which helps reconcile proposals that have been taken to represent alternative theories of attention.
