Ants on plants: a meta-analysis of the role of ants as plant biotic defenses
Félix Baumgarten Rosumek,Fernando A. O. Silveira,Frederico de Siqueira Neves,Newton P. U. Barbosa,Lívia Santos Diniz,Yumi Oki,Flávia Fonseca Pezzini,G. Wilson Fernandes,Tatiana Cornelissen +8 more
TL;DR: The results suggest that ants do act as plant biotic defenses, but the effects of their presence are more pronounced in tropical systems, especially in myrmecophytic plants.

Biology and impacts of Pacific island invasive species. 3. The African big-headed ant, Pheidole megacephala (Hymenoptera: Formicidae).
TL;DR: The African big-headed ant, Pheidole megacephala, is now widespread in tropical areas; populations are also found at higher latitudes in Australia, New Zealand, and Japan.

Biodiversity consequences of land-use change and forest disturbance in the Amazon:a multi-scale assessment using ant communities
Ricardo R. C. Solar,Ricardo R. C. Solar,Jos Barlow,Jos Barlow,Alan N. Andersen,José H. Schoereder,Erika Berenguer,Joice Ferreira,Toby A. Gardner +8 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a detailed regional assessment of the response of ant communities to land-use change and forest disturbance in the Brazilian Amazon is presented, examining variation in ant species richness and composition, and asking which set of environmental variables best predict observed patterns of diversity.
Journal ArticleDOI

The Genetical Evolution of Social Behaviour. I
TL;DR: A genetical mathematical model is described which allows for interactions between relatives on one another's fitness and a quantity is found which incorporates the maximizing property of Darwinian fitness, named “inclusive fitness”.

Indicators for Monitoring Biodiversity: A Hierarchical Approach
TL;DR: The three primay attributes of biodiversity recognized by Jerry Franklin are expanded into a nested hierarcby that incorporates ele- ments of each attribute at four levels of organization: re- gional landscape, community-ecosystem, population- species, andgenetic.

The Diversity of Life
TL;DR: In this article, the authors trace the processes that produce new species, explain the importance of biodiversity, and recommend steps to help preserve diversity and improve the general quality of life of humans.
