Kinetic properties of the Alfven wave, which originate from the finite perpendicular wavelength effects, are shown for both linear and nonlinear regime. The wave accompanies a parallel electric field and can propagate in the direction perpendicular to the ambient magnetic field. The kinetic Alfven wave can be excited in a plasma either by drift wave instability or resonant mode conversion of a surface magnetohydrodynamic wave.read more

Magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling

TL;DR: In this article, a simple two-dimensional model of the magnetosphere-ionosphere system is discussed in which a localized electromotive force applied across a magnetic field line at t = 0 is shown to propagate along the magnetic field with the Alfven velocity.

Correlated low‐frequency electric and magnetic noise along the auroral field lines
TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe low-frequency electric and magnetic noise observed at low altitudes over the auroral zone, and two general models are discussed to interpret these observations, one based on static electric and magnetar fields imbedded in the ionosphere and the other based on Alfven waves propagating along the magnetic field lines.

Ion cyclotron resonance heated conics: Theory and observations
TL;DR: A general theoretical treatment of energetic oxygen ion conic formation through cyclotron resonance with magnetospheric electromagnetic plasma turbulence is presented in this article, with suitable assumptions, there exists a similarity regime in which the process may be profitably characterized by two parameters corresponding roughly to the velocity scale and pitch angle of the ion distribution.

Akira Hasegawa,Liu Chen +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, an externally applied oscillating magnetic field (at a frequency near 1 MHz for typical tokamak parameters) resonantly mode converts to the kinetic Alfven wave, the wave with the perpendicular wavelength comparable to the ion gyroradius.
