Abstract
In this paper we describe the basic operating principles of laser radar sensors and the typical algorithms used to process laser radar imagery for robotic applications. We review 12 laser radar sensors to illustrate the variety of systems that have been applied to robotic applications wherein information extracted from the laser radar data is used to automatically control a mechanism or process. Next we describe selected robotic applications in seven areas: autonomous vehicle navigation, walking machine foot placement, automated service vehicles, manufacturing and inspection, automotive, military and agriculture. We conclude with a discussion of the status of laser radar technology and suggest trends we see in the application of laser radar sensors to robotics. Many new applications are expected as the maturity level progresses and system costs are reduced.

Single-plane versus three-plane methods for relative range error evaluation of medium-range 3D imaging systems

TL;DR: In this article, the authors compare the two methods that had been initially proposed for calculating the relative range error of medium-range (2 m to 150 m) optical non-contact 3D imaging systems: one based on a single plane (single-plane assembly) and the second based on an assembly of three mutually non-orthogonal planes (threeplane assembly).

Spectral ladar: towards active 3D multispectral imaging

TL;DR: The Spectral LADAR concept, an augmented implementation of traditional LADar that uses a polychromatic source to obtain range-resolved 3D spectral images which are used to identify objects based on combined spatial and spectral features, resolving positions in three dimensions and up to hundreds of meters in distance is presented.

Bayesian estimation of distance and surface normal with a time-of-flight laser rangefinder

TL;DR: A Bayesian estimation method for measurement of both range and surface orientation using a laser rangefinder, which provides more accurate estimates of range for dark surfaces that are difficult to measure and simultaneously provides estimates of surface normals.

Experimental evaluation of sensitivity enhancement achieved by heterodyne optical detection in AMCW laser rangefinders for machine vision

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe an experiment designed to measure the performance enhancement that can be achieved by heterodyne detection in an amplitude modulated continuous wave (AMCW) system, better suited to short and medium range operation.

Laser and Radar Based Robotic Perception

TL;DR: Following a signal level analysis of both laser and radar range finders, this paper addresses stochastic measurement modeling and map representations and a review of FB perception methods is presented, with particular attention to the important fields of robotic mapping and SLAM.

Laser speckle and related phenomena

TL;DR: Dainty et al. as mentioned in this paper described statistical properties of laser speckle patterns and proposed a method to reduce the number of sparseness of the laser beam in Partially Coherent Light (PCL).
