The problem of laser‐induced heating and radial expansion of a low‐density plasma in a solenoidal magnetic field has been examined by means of a Lagrangian computer code incorporating an exact solution of the relevant MHD equations plus thermal conduction. It is shown that for long‐term heating with a realistic range of laser power and magnetic field strength, the resulting radial temperature and density profiles can be closely approximated by a quasistatic solution of these equations.read more

TL;DR: The temporally resolved Thomson-scattering measurements of the electron temperature profile show that the heat front propagation transverse to a high-power laser beam is slowed resulting in extremely strong local heating.

Quenching of the nonlocal electron heat transport by large external magnetic fields in a laser produced plasma measured with imaging Thomson scattering
Dustin Froula,P. Davis,B. B. Pollock,Laurent Divol,James Ross,J. Edwards,Richard Town,Dwight Price,Siegfried Glenzer,A. A. Offenberger,George Tynan,A.N. James +11 more
TL;DR: In this article, the quenching of nonlocal heat transport in a laser-generated plasma by high external magnetic fields was measured using imaging Thomson scattering, and the results were simulated with the 2D hydrodynamic code LASNEX with a recently included magnetic field model that self-consistently evolves the fields in the plasma.

Nonlinear Behavior of Stimulated Brillouin and Raman Scattering in Laser-Irradiated Plasmas
TL;DR: In this paper, analytic theory and inhomogeneous plasma simulations are presented to show the nonlinear development of the Brillouin and Raman backscatter instabilities, but particle trapping and heating effects associated with the excited electrostatic wave can significantly reduce this.
