TLDR
It is still uncertain whether portal pressure is useful in predicting variceal bleeding, but two groups of investigators have recently shown that wedged hepatic vein pressure and portal vein pressure are essentially identical in alcoholic liver disease and probably in cryptogenic cirrhosis and chronic active hepatitis.

Journal ArticleDOI

Lack of prognostic usefulness of hepatic venous pressures and hemodynamic values in a select group of patients with severe alcoholic cirrhosis.

TL;DR: Measurement of the hepatic venous pressure gradient is not helpful in the prognostic assessment in a select group of patients with severe alcoholic cirrhosis.
Journal ArticleDOI

The hypotensive effect of oral nitroglycerin on portal venous pressure in patients with cirrhotic portal hypertension

TL;DR: Findings support the hypothesis that oral nitroglycerin is delivered differentially to the portal venous bed with differential effects on PVP, and further studies are needed to evaluate this agent and this strategy for their potential role in long‐term control of portal pressure.
Journal ArticleDOI

Chronic splanchnic hemodynamic effects of spironolactone with unrestricted sodium diet in patients with compensated cirrhosis.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that spironolactonewith an unrestricted sodium diet decreased the HVPG ingrade A patients but did not significantly decrease theHVPG in grade B patients.
Journal ArticleDOI

Liver haemodynamics and function in alcoholic cirrhosis. Relation to testosterone treatment and ethanol consumption.

TL;DR: Oral testosterone treatment of men with alcoholic cirrhosis does not explain the significant improvement of liver haemodynamics and function observed in this study, but the improvement may be due to reduced ethanol consumption.
Journal ArticleDOI

The use of crystalloidal and colloidal solutions for volume replacement in hypovolemic shock.

TL;DR: Colloidal fluids and blood provide more rapid expansion of the intravascular space when compared with crystalloidal fluids, and these principles guide therapy in hypovolemic shock.

TL;DR: Whether or not the Australia antigen represents a virus remains to be established; nonetheless, identification of this antigen in the serum of hepatitis patients constitutes a fascinating development that may, hopefully, presage eradication of transfusion-induced hepatitis.
