Abstract
The fracture behavior of Al2O3 containing 5 vol% 0.15μm SiC particles was investigated using indentation techniques. A significant increase in strength was achieved by the addition of SiC particles to the base Al2O3. Specifically, the strength increased from 560 MPa for Al2O3 to 760 MPa for the composite samples (average values for unindented hotpressed bars tested in four-point bending). After annealing for 2 h at 1300°C, the average strength of the composite samples increased to about 1000 MPa. Toughness was estimated using indentation-strength data. While there was a slight increase in toughness, the increase was not sufficient to account for the increase in the unindented strength on SiC particle addition. It is suggested that the observed strengthening and apparent toughening were due to a machining-induced compressive surface stress.

Structural ceramic nanocomposites

TL;DR: In this paper, structural ceramic nanocomposites are reviewed with emphasis on the Al 2 O 3 SiC and Si 3 N 4 SiC systems, and it is shown that the strength increase can best be related to a reduction in processing defect size.

Strengthening and Toughening Mechanisms of Ceramic Nanocomposites

TL;DR: In this article, small, brittle particulate inclusions have been shown to cause crack-tip bridging at short distances behind the crack tip, and it is the latter that produces the very high fracture strength of the ceramic nanocomposite.

A Critical Evaluation of Indentation Techniques for Measuring Fracture Toughness: I, Direct Crack Measurements

TL;DR: In this paper, the application of indentation techniques to the evaluation of fracture toughness is examined critically, in two parts: the first part is focused on an approach which involves direct measurement of Vickers-produced radial cracks as a function of the indentation load.

New design concept of structural ceramics―ceramic nanocomposites

TL;DR: In this paper, intergranular nanocomposites were found to have two to five times higher toughness and strength at room temperature than those of monolithic materials, and the hardness, toughness, strength and fracture resistance for creep and fatigue at high temperatures as well as the thermal shock fracture resistance were also strongly improved for these composites.
