TLDR
In this paper, the authors present a waste management strategy for less-industrialized nations, where citizens produce less waste, which is mostly biogenic, a combination of formal and non-formal waste management.Abstract:
Municipal solid waste (MSW) reflects the culture that produces it and affects the health of the people and the environment surrounding it. Globally, people are discarding growing quantities of waste, and its composition is more complex than ever before, as plastic and electronic consumer products diffuse. Concurrently, the world is urbanizing at an unprecedented rate. These trends pose a challenge to cities, which are charged with managing waste in a socially and environmentally acceptable manner. Effective waste management strategies depend on local waste characteristics, which vary with cultural, climatic, and socioeconomic variables, and institutional capacity. Globally, waste governance is becoming regionalized and formalized. In industrialized nations, where citizens produce far more waste than do other citizens, waste tends to be managed formally at a municipal or regional scale. In less-industrialized nations, where citizens produce less waste, which is mostly biogenic, a combination of formal and ...read more

Review of LCA studies of solid waste management systems--part I: lessons learned and perspectives.
Alexis Laurent,Ioannis Bakas,Julie Clavreul,Anna Bernstad,Monia Niero,Emmanuel Gentil,Michael Zwicky Hauschild,Thomas Højlund Christensen +7 more
TL;DR: A critical review of 222 published LCA studies of SWMS found that there is little agreement in the conclusions among them and recommend stakeholders in solid waste management to regard LCA as a tool, which allows identifying critical problems and proposing improvement options adapted to the local specificities.

Review of LCA studies of solid waste management systems - Part II: Methodological guidance for a better practice.
Alexis Laurent,Julie Clavreul,Anna Bernstad,Ioannis Bakas,Monia Niero,Emmanuel Gentil,Thomas Højlund Christensen,Michael Zwicky Hauschild +7 more
TL;DR: Results show that malpractices exist in several aspects of the LCA with large differences across studies and detailed recommendations are provided to practitioners of waste management LCAs.

Use of U.S. Croplands for Biofuels Increases Greenhouse Gases Through Emissions from Land-Use Change
Tim Searchinger,Ralph E. Heimlich,Richard A. Houghton,Fengxia Dong,Amani Elobeid,Jacinto F. Fabiosa,Simla Tokgoz,Dermot J. Hayes,Tun-Hsiang Yu +8 more
TL;DR: This article found that corn-based ethanol, instead of producing a 20% savings, nearly doubled greenhouse emissions over 30 years and increased greenhouse gases for 167 years, by using a worldwide agricultural model to estimate emissions from land-use change.
