Tribological and mechanical properties of nanocrystalline-TiC/a-C nanocomposite thin films
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the relationship between x-ray structure, mechanical properties, coefficient of friction, and wear coefficient of nc-TiC/a-C nanocomposite films sputtered using unbalanced magnetron from a composed C/Ti target.

Ti-DLC films with superior friction performance
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors show that after the incorporation of Ti together with O, the DLC films exhibit superior friction performance, including ultralow and steady friction coefficients (about 0.008), little sensitivity to relative humidity and independence of counterpart material and test atmosphere.

Influence of sputter damage on the XPS analysis of metastable nanocomposite coatings
TL;DR: X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is a standard method of determining chemical bonding in eg nanocomposites as mentioned in this paper, however, sputter-cleaning of the sample prior to analysis can substantially alter the attained information.

On the significance of the H/E ratio in wear control: a nanocomposite coating approach to optimised tribological behaviour
Adrian Leyland,Allan Matthews +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors discuss the concept of nanocomposite coatings with high hardness and low elastic modulus, which can exhibit improved toughness, and are therefore better suited for optimising the wear resistance of real industrial substrate materials (i.e., steels and light alloys, with similarly low moduli).

Supertough wear-resistant coatings with ‘chameleon’ surface adaptation
TL;DR: The chameleon's ability to change skin color depending on environment to increase its chances of surviving served as an inspiration in the development of self-adaptive supertough wear-resistant coatings as mentioned in this paper.
