Increasing returns: historiographic issues and path dependence
TL;DR: The history of the analysis of increasing returns in economics is qualitatively different from the usual cumulative history of knowledge, as exemplified by the history of perfectly competitive analysis as mentioned in this paper, and the reason for this irregular history lies, in my view, in the analytic nature of the subject.
Journal ArticleDOI
Environmental policies and innovation: A knowledge-based perspective on cooperative approaches
TL;DR: In this article, the authors highlight the value of this type of approach in situations of great uncertainty where a coordinated process of innovation is required to achieve ambitious environmental targets, and explain why monitoring of innovation by the authorities, focusing on coordination mechanisms, is a crucial issue on which further research should be carried out.
Journal ArticleDOI
Competition in Multi-sided Markets: Divide and Conquer
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors studied Stackelberg price competition in a multi-sided market, where a leading platform may refrain from selling to some side in order to soften competition, it tends to favor excessively balanced market shares and may prefer compatibility to reduce price competition.
Journal ArticleDOI
Hinterland strategies of port authorities: A case study of the port of Barcelona
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a case study of the port authority of Barcelona and show that the strategy of the Barcelona and the consequent active involvement in the hinterland has had a significant impact on attracting container volumes from distant hinterlands and improving the accessibility of the Port.
Journal ArticleDOI
Does fertility behavior spread among friends
Nicoletta Balbo,Nicola Barban +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, a series of discrete-time event history models with random effects at the dyadic level were used to investigate whether and through which mechanisms friends' fertility behavior affects an individual's transition to parenthood.

Monopoly, quality, and regulation
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors argue that under regimes of monopoly and monopolistic competition, product characteristics (which are often endogenous variables) are not usually optimally set under the pressure of market forces, and that regulation is also beset with difficulties when price and quality are decision variables.
Journal ArticleDOI
Critical Mass and Tariff Structure in Electronic Communications Markets
Shmuel S. Oren,Stephen A. Smith +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors developed an economic model that determines both the required critical mass size for startup and the ultimate expansion level of such a system and evaluated the effects of different pricing structures for the service under the assumption that users maximize benefits minus cost and a monopoly supplier maximizes profit.

Tax Analysis in an Oligopoly Model
Michael L. Katz,Harvey S. Rosen +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors use the conjectural variations model of oligopoly to analyze the way in which the incidence of a tax depends upon the pattern of firm interaction and show that the errors that arise in excess burden calculations when incorrect assumptions on market structure are made.
