Abstract
We describe a new class of instanton effects in string compactifications that preserve only = 1 supersymmetry in four dimensions. As is well-known, worldsheet or brane instantons in such a background can sometimes contribute to an effective superpotential for the moduli of the compactification. We generalize this phenomenon by showing that such instantons can also contribute to new multi-fermion and higher-derivative F-terms in the low-energy effective action. We consider in most detail the example of heterotic compactification on a Calabi-Yau threefold X with gauge bundle V, in which case we study worldsheet instanton effects that deform the complex structure of the moduli space associated to X and V. We also give new, slightly more economical derivations of some previous results about worldsheet instantons in Type IIA Calabi-Yau compactifications.

Fabrication of Superhydrophobic Cellulose-Based Materials through a Solution-Immersion Process

TL;DR: An industrial waterproof reagent was used for fabricating a superhydrophobic surface on a cellulose-based material (cotton fabric or paper) through a solution-immersion method, and it was revealed that nanoscale roughness protuberances uniformly covered the surface, thus transforming the cellulose fromsuperhydrophilic to superHydrophobic with a water contact angle of 157 degrees.

Kodaira-Spencer theory of gravity and exact results for quantum string amplitudes

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors developed techniques to compute higher loop string amplitudes for twisted N = 2 theories with ε = 3 (i.e. the critical case) by exploiting the discovery of an anomaly at every genus in decoupling of BRST trivial states, captured by a master anomaly equation.

Fivebranes, membranes and non-perturbative string theory

TL;DR: In this article, nonperturbative instanton corrections to the moduli space geometry of type IIA string theory compactified on a Calabi-Yau space are derived and found to contain order e − 1/g s contributions, where g s is the string coupling.

Exact results on the space of vacua of four-dimensional SUSY gauge theories

TL;DR: Four-dimensional quantum field theories which have a continuous manifold of inequivalent exact ground states a moduli space of vacua are considered, finding that singularities can be smoothed out and new massless states appear there.
