Nonlinear gravity and capillary-gravity waves
Frédéric Dias,C. Kharif +1 more
TLDR
In this article, the bifurcation, stability, and evolution of gravity and capillary-gravity waves are discussed. And the importance of surface tension effects on steep waves is studied.Abstract:
This review deals primarily with the bifurcation, stability, and evolution of gravity and capillary-gravity waves. Recent results on the bifurcation of various types of capillary-gravity waves, including two-dimensional solitary waves at the minimum of the dispersion curve, are reviewed. A survey of various mechanisms (including the most recent ones) to explain the frequency downshift phenomenon is provided. Recent significant results are given on “horseshoe” patterns, which are three-dimensional structures observable on the sea surface under the action of wind or in wave tank experiments. The so-called short-crested waves are then discussed. Finally, the importance of surface tension effects on steep waves is studied.read more

A new view of nonlinear water waves: the Hilbert spectrum
TL;DR: In this paper, Hilbert spectral analysis is proposed as an alternative to wavelet analysis, which provides not only a more precise definition of particular events in time-frequency space, but also more physically meaningful interpretations of the underlying dynamic processes.

Microscale acoustofluidics: Microfluidics driven via acoustics and ultrasonics
James Friend,Leslie Y. Yeo +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, the use of acoustic fields, principally ultrasonics, for application in microfluidics is reviewed, and the abundance of interesting phenomena arising from nonlinear interactions in ultrasound that easily appear at these small scales is considered, especially in surface acoustic wave devices that are simple to fabricate with planar lithography techniques.

Physical Mechanisms of the Rogue Wave Phenomenon
Christian Kharif,Efim Pelinovsky +1 more
TL;DR: A review of physical mechanisms of the rogue wave phenomenon is given in this article, where the authors demonstrate that freak waves may appear in deep and shallow waters and demonstrate that these mechanisms remain valid but should be modified.

Instabilities, breathers and rogue waves in optics
TL;DR: Curious wave phenomena that occur in optical fibres due to the interplay of instability and nonlinear effects are reviewed in this article, where the authors propose a method to detect such phenomena.

Stability of periodic waves of finite amplitude on the surface of a deep fluid
TL;DR: In this article, the stability of steady nonlinear waves on the surface of an infinitely deep fluid with a free surface was studied. And the authors considered the problem of stability of surface waves as part of the more general problem of nonlinear wave in media with dispersion.

The disintegration of wave trains on deep water Part 1. Theory
T. Brooke Benjamin,J. E. Feir +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a theoretical analysis of the stability of periodic wave trains to small disturbances in the form of a pair of side-band modes is presented, where the wave train becomes highly irregular far from its origin, even when the departures from periodicity are scarcely detectable at the start.

On the non-linear energy transfer in a gravity-wave spectrum Part 1. General theory
TL;DR: In this article, the energy flux in a finite-depth gravity-wave spectrum resulting from weak non-linear couplings between the spectral components is evaluated by means of a perturbation method.
