Abstract
Introduction. Mathematical approximations have been used since ancient times to estimate solutions, but with the rise of digital computing the field of numerical analysis has become a discipline in its own right. Numerical analysts develop and study algorithms that provide approximate solutions to various types of numerical problems, and they analyze the accuracy, efficiency and robustness of these algorithms. As technology becomes ever more essential for the study of mathematics, learning algorithms that provide approximate solutions to mathematical problems and understanding the accuracy of such approximations becomes increasingly important. This report contains a description of the typical topics covered in a two-semester sequence in Numerical Analysis.

Dynamic simulation of a beta-type Stirling engine with cam-drive mechanism via the combination of the thermodynamic and dynamic models

TL;DR: In this paper, a dynamic simulation of a Stirling engine with a cam-drive mechanism used in concentrating solar power system has been performed, and a dynamic model of the mechanism is developed and then incorporated with the thermodynamic model so as to predict the transient behavior of the engine in the hot-start period.

On Optimal Perfect Reconstruction Feedback Quantizers

TL;DR: Novel results on perfect reconstruction feedback quantizers (PRFQs) are presented, i.e., noise-shaping, predictive and sigma-delta A/D converters whose signal transfer function is unity and the end-to-end MSE of an optimal PRFQ which uses the optimal filters decreases exponentially with increasing oversampling ratio.

Butyrate production from carbon monoxide by Butyribacterium methylotrophicum

TL;DR: By modifying culture conditions, the carbon and electron flow of Butyribacterium methylotrophicum can be manipulated to yield butyrate as the major product, which has significance for fuels and chemicals production from carbon monoxide.

A system-theoretic framework for a wide class of systems I: Applications to numerical analysis

TL;DR: In this paper, a system-theoretic framework for the study of hybrid uncertain systems, which do not satisfy the so-called "semigroup property", is proposed, and characterizations of the notion of robust global asymptotic output stability (RGAOS) are given.

Exact 3D stress analysis of laminated composite plates by sampling surfaces method

TL;DR: In this paper, the exact 3D elasticity solutions of cross-ply and angle-ply laminated composite plates are derived by using the sampling surfaces (SaS) method.
