On the Origin of the Cosmic Radiation

Enrico Fermi

TLDR
In this paper, a theory of the origin of cosmic radiation is proposed according to which cosmic rays are originated and accelerated primarily in the interstellar space of the galaxy by collisions against moving magmetic fields.
Abstract
A theory of the origin of cosmic radiation is proposed according to which cosmic rays are originated and accelerated primarily in the interstellar space of the galaxy by collisions against moving magmetic fields. One of the features of the theory is that it yields naturally an inverse power law for the spectral distribution of the cosmic rays. The chief difficulty is that it fails to explain in a straight-forward way the heavy nuclei observed in the primary radiation.

A universal instability of many-dimensional oscillator systems

Boris Chirikov
- 01 May 1979 -
TL;DR: In this article, the authors demonstrate the mechanism for a universal instability, the Arnold diffusion, which occurs in the oscillating systems having more than two degrees of freedom, which results in an irregular, or stochastic, motion of the system as if the latter were influenced by a random perturbation even though, in fact, the motion is governed by purely dynamical equations.

The physics of gamma-ray bursts

TL;DR: A review of the current theoretical understanding of the physical processes believed to take place in GRB's can be found in this article, where the authors focus on the afterglow itself, the jet break in the light curve, and the optical flash that accompanies the GRB.

An introduction to the theory of diffusive shock acceleration of energetic particles in tenuous plasmas

TL;DR: In this article, the central idea of diffusive shock acceleration is presented from microscopic and macroscopic viewpoints; applied to reactionless test particles in a steady plane shock, the mechanism is shown to produce a power law spectrum in momentum with a slope which, to lowest order in the ratio of plasma to particle speed, depends only on the compression in the shock.

The passage of energetic charged particles through interplanetary space

TL;DR: In this article, a general expression for the particle diffusion coefficient kij, including both scattering in magnetic irregularities and systematic pressure drifts, was derived from the condition that energetic solar particles in interplanetary space random walk in the irregularities in the large-scale inter-planetary magnetic field, and the observed fields show that the diffusion coefficient is of the order of 1021-1022 cm2/sec.

Optics in the relativistic regime

TL;DR: In this paper, a number of consequences of relativistic-strength optical fields are surveyed, including wakefield generation, a relativistically version of optical rectification, in which longitudinal field effects could be as large as the transverse ones.
