TLDR
In this article, it is shown through a systematic experimental investigation that although Kelvin-Helmholtz-like instability plays an important role in initiating the transition process, it is the leapfrogging phenomenon between the primary and secondary vortex rings which is responsible for hastening the development of azimuthal bending waves.

Microvortex generators in high-speed flow

TL;DR: A review of the state-of-the-art of microvortex generators and their effect on separated shock/boundary-layer interactions is provided in this paper, where the flowfield around and behind an MVG is discussed, paying attention on the major and minor vortical features.
Journal ArticleDOI

Micro-vortex generators for shock wave/boundary layer interactions

TL;DR: In this article, the effect of micro-vortex generators (MVGs) on SBLIs has been reviewed, with emphasis on the strength and decay of the streamwise vortices and on the ring-type or hairpin vortice which have been detected in the instantaneous flow around the wake.

Experimental Study of Near Wake of Micro Vortex Generators in Supersonic Flow

TL;DR: In this paper, detailed schlieren and laser lightsheet visualizations of the near wake of the micro vortex generator revealed large structures that were different from those of the undisturbed turbulent boundary layer, attributed to the rapid breakdown of the primary trailing vortex pair.
Journal ArticleDOI

Numerical and experimental study of pulse-jet cleaning in fabric filters

TL;DR: In this article, a 3D model of a low-pressure fabric filter with 28 bags, in length of 10m and in general full-scale dimensions of the cleaning system is used to verify the reliability of the present CFD model.
Journal ArticleDOI

The interaction of the piston vortex with a piston-generated vortex ring

TL;DR: In this article, the effects of a piston vortex on the vorticity evolution of a vortex ring were investigated and it was found that imperfect merging of the piston vortex with the primary vortex ring promotes the growth of an instability which leads to early transition to turbulence of initially laminar vortex rings.

The instability of short waves on a vortex ring

TL;DR: In this paper, a simple model for the experimentally observed instability of the vortex ring to azimuthal bending waves of wavelength comparable with the core size is presented, and short-wave instabilities are discussed for both the ring and the vortex pair.

The impact of a vortex ring on a wall

TL;DR: In this article, the flow induced by a vortex ring approaching a plane wall on a trajectory normal to the wall is investigated for an incompressible fluid, which is otherwise stagnant.

The formation of vortex rings

Ari Glezer
- 01 Dec 1988 -
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors classified the generating conditions for vortex rings and classified the conditions under which a given vortex generator produces either an initially laminar ring, which may or may not undergo instability and transition to turbulence, or an initially turbulent ring.

Vortex rings impinging on walls : axisymmetric and three-dimensional simulations

TL;DR: In this article, a simulation of vortex rings impinging on flat boundaries revealed the same features observed in experiments, and the results for the impact with a free-slip wall compared very well with previous numerical simulations that used spectral methods.
Journal ArticleDOI

The instability of the thin vortex ring of constant vorticity

TL;DR: In this paper, a theoretical study indicates that vortex rings at moderate Reynolds numbers are unstable to azimuthal bending waves, and the stability analysis is developed for a certain class of bending waves that are unstable on a line filament in the presence of strain.
