Abstract
The design for an optical switching system for minicomputers that uses an optical spatial light modulator such as a Hughes liquid crystal light valve is presented. The switching system is designed to connect 80 minicomputers coupled to the switching system by optical fibers. The system has two major parts: the connection system that connects the data lines by which the computers communicate via a two-dimensional optical matrix array and the control system that controls which computers are connected. The basic system, the matrix-based connecting system, and some of the optical components to be used are described. Finally, the details of the control system are given and illustrated with a discussion of timing.

Optical Crossbar Networks

TL;DR: An important part of a parallel processing system is the interconnection needed for the transfer of information among processors, and between processors and memories; therefore, the network should be capable of providing fast parallel access to data.

Third order nonlinear optical interactions in thin films of poly-p-phenylenebenzobisthiazole polymer investigated by picosecond and subpicosecond degenerate four wave mixing

TL;DR: The third order nonlinear optical susceptibility has been measured by degenerate four wave mixing in a 33μm-thick biaxial film of a conjugated aromatic heterocyclic polymer, commonly known as PBT, which has a very high mechanical strength due to its rigid rod conformation as well as environmental stability and a high laser damage threshold.

Ab initio calculations of polarizability and second hyperpolarizability in benzene including electron correlation treated by Møller-Plesset theory

TL;DR: In this paper, an ab initio calculation of polarizability and second hyperpolarizability for the benzene molecule including electron-electron correlation was performed using the finite field method.

Third‐order nonlinear optical interaction and conformational transition in poly‐4‐BCMU polydiacetylene studied by picosecond and subpicosecond degenerate four wave mixing

TL;DR: In this paper, the electronic third-order nonlinear optical interaction in a solution cast film of a polydiacetylene has been studied by degenerate four wave mixing and the results demonstrate a subpicosecond response and a very high χ(3) value.

Synthesis, growth, structural and HOMO and LUMO, MEP analysis of a new stilbazolium derivative crystal: A enhanced third-order NLO properties with a high laser-induced damage threshold for NLO applications

TL;DR: In this article, a new organic third-order nonlinear optical crystal from stilbazolium family 2-[2-(4-methoxy-phenyl) vinyl]-1-methyl-pyridinium tetrafluoroborate (4MSTB) has been synthesized and grown by slow evaporation method for the first time.
