TLDR
In this article, simple expressions are given that relate the duration of a self-phase modulated ultrashort optical laser pulse to the number of minima (or maxima) and the maximum Stokes (or anti-Stokes) frequency shift of its spectrum.Abstract:

Recent progress in quantum cascade lasers and applications
TL;DR: In this article, a detailed review of the performance of quantum cascade (QC) laser can be found, where the inter-subband transition is characterized through ultrafast carrier dynamics and the absence of the linewidth enhancement factor, with both features expected to have significant impact on laser performance.
Journal ArticleDOI
Intensity discrimination of optical pulses with birefringent fibers.
TL;DR: An intensity discriminator for optical pulses can be made with a birefringent fiber using an intensity-dependent state of polarization out of the fiber for separating the intense subpicosecond pulses from the weaker uncompressed background.

TL;DR: In this article, a review of the diagnostic techniques currently available for the generation of intense ultrashort light pulses in mode-locked laser systems is presented, with a discussion of ultrafast shutter techniques, together with a section on pulse chirping and dynamic spectroscopy.

TL;DR: In this paper, a distributed feedback (DFB) geometry was used to achieve state-of-the-art performance in the mid-infrared range from 4 to 20 µm by using the thickness of the quantum wells in the active region.

Self-Mode-Locking of Quantum Cascade Lasers with Giant Ultrafast Optical Nonlinearities
Roberto Paiella,Federico Capasso,Claire F. Gmachl,Deborah L. Sivco,James N. Baillargeon,Albert L. Hutchinson,Alfred Y. Cho,H. C. Liu +7 more
TL;DR: The generation of picosecond self-mode-locked pulses from midinfrared quantum cascade lasers, at wavelengths within the important molecular fingerprint region, is reported on with a model in which one of these nonlinearities, the intensity-dependent refractive index of the lasing transition, creates a nonlinear waveguide where the optical losses decrease with increasing intensity.

Self-Modulation, Self-Steepening, and Spectral Development of Light in Small-Scale Trapped Filaments
TL;DR: In this paper, the influence of a nonzero orientational relaxation time and of linear dispersion upon the phase (and amplitude) development of the light as it interacts with the optically nonlinear medium is studied.
