Optimization of media by evolutionary algorithms for production of polyols

TLDR
A new, real coded evolutionary algorithm was developed for optimization of fermentation medium in parallel shake-flask experiments, which obtains the optimal values of important process variables, namely, inoculum size and sugar, yeast extract, urea, and MgSO4 concentrations.
Abstract
Biotransformation of sucrose-based medium to polyols has been reported for the first time using osmophilic yeast, Hansenula anomala A new, real coded evolutionary algorithm was developed for optimization of fermentation medium in parallel shake-flask experiments By iteratively employing the nature-inspired techniques of selection, crossover, and mutation for a fixed number of generations, the algorithm obtains the optimal values of important process variables, namely, inoculum size and sugar, yeast extract, urea, and MgSO4 concentrations Maximum polyols yield of 7643% has been achieved The method is useful for reducing the overall development time to obtain an efficient fermentation process

Potential of fermentation profiling via rapid measurement of amino acid metabolism by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry.

TL;DR: Correlation coefficients for the time profiles of each amino acid measured illustrate that while several amino acids are differentially metabolized in similar fermentations, a select group of amino acids display strong correlations in these samples, indicating a sub-population of analytes that may be most useful for fermentation profiling.

Effect of medium osmolarity on the bioproduction of glycerol and ethanol by Hansenula anomala growing on glucose and ammonium

TL;DR: The osmotolerant yeast Hansenula anomala survives in media at low water activity resulting from increasing NaCl concentrations in the culture medium by producing compatible solutes and was clearly related to another mechanism other than osmotic: it was excreted by a fermentative mechanism to ensure energy for cell maintenance.
