The continued demand for edible oils by the ever increasing population makes it pertinent to explore new sources. In this direction, two new edible oils namely palm oil and rice bran oil have been subjected to nutritional and toxicological evaluations of their chemicals constituents. An attempt has been made in this article to assess the acceptability of the two oils based on the various investigations that have been carried out so far.

Optimization of ultrasound-assisted extraction of oil from olive pomace using response surface technology: Oil recovery, unsaponifiable matter, total phenol content and antioxidant activity
Sofia Chanioti,Constantina Tzia +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, the optimal conditions for ultrasound assisted extraction of olive pomace oil were determined by response surface methodology (RSM), and the effect of temperature, solid/liquid ratio and particle size was investigated on oil yield, its unsaponifiable matter (USM%), total phenol content (TPC) and antioxidant activity (DPPH).

Antioxidant capacity of cinnamon extract for palm oil stability
Muhammad Shahid,Hafiza Saima,Adeela Yasmin,Muhammad Tahir Nadeem,Muhammad Imran,Muhammad Afzaal +5 more
TL;DR: It can be concluded that the cinnamon extract is effective in reducing the oxidation of palm oil and it can be successfully used in synthetic food preparations.
Fatty acids, metal composition and physico-chemical parameters of Igbemo Ekiti rice bran oil
TL;DR: In this article, the metal composition of the crude rice bran appeared higher but not statistically significant at 95% confidence interval compared with that of the Rice bran oil, which indicated that it has potential for cooking and industrial use if refined to reduce the Fe and Cu overload, and could be an alternative to palm oil.

Performance and exhaust emission characteristics of variable compression ratio diesel engine fuelled with esters of crude rice bran oil.
TL;DR: The blends of crude rice bran biodiesel show better results than diesel with increase in compression ratio, and are found to be good and viable feedstock for biodiesel production.

Comparison of effects of dietary saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated fatty acids on plasma lipids and lipoproteins in man.

TL;DR: Results of this study show that oleic acid is as effective as linoleic acid in lowering LDL-C levels in normo-triglyceridemic patients, and oleoic acid seemingly reduces HDL-C Levels less frequently than does linolesic acid.

Inhibition of cholesterol absorption and synthesis in rats by sesamin.
Nobuaki Hirose,Takao Inoue,Kazuyoshi Nishihara,Michihiro Sugano,K Akimoto,Shuji Shimizu,H Yamada +6 more
TL;DR: Since sesamin lowered both serum and liver cholesterol levels by inhibiting absorption and synthesis of cholesterol simultaneously, it deserves further study as a possible hypocholesterolemic agent of natural origin.

Dose-dependent suppression of serum cholesterol by tocotrienol-rich fraction (TRF25) of rice bran in hypercholesterolemic humans
TL;DR: The results show that a dose of 100 mg/day of TRF25 produce maximum decreases of 20, 25, 14 (P<0.05) and 12%, respectively, in serum total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, apolipoprotein B and triglycerides compared with the baseline values, suggesting that an optimal dose may be the optimal dose for controlling the risk of coronary heart disease in hypercholesterolemic human subjects.

Oryzanol decreases cholesterol absorption and aortic fatty streaks in hamsters
TL;DR: It is concluded that a constituent of the nonsaponifiable lipids of R BO, oryzanol, is at least partially responsible for the cholesterol-lowering action of RBO and was associated with significant reductions in aortic fatty streak formation.

Nutritional and biochemical aspects of the hypolipidemic action of rice bran oil: a review.
TL;DR: RBO, an unconventional oil recently introduced onto the Indian market for human use, which is rich in tocopherols and tocotrienols, may improve oxidative stability and could be a suitable edible oil for patients with hyperlipidemia.
