Abstract
Starts with a brief review of the history and the application areas considered in the literature. The author then proceeds with introductory modeling examples, behavioral and structural properties, three methods of analysis, subclasses of Petri nets and their analysis. In particular, one section is devoted to marked graphs, the concurrent system model most amenable to analysis. Introductory discussions on stochastic nets with their application to performance modeling, and on high-level nets with their application to logic programming, are provided. Also included are recent results on reachability criteria. Suggestions are provided for further reading on many subject areas of Petri nets. >

The application of Petri-nets to workflow management

TL;DR: This paper introduces workflow management as an application domain for Petri nets, presents state-of-the-art results with respect to the verification of workflows, and highlights some Petri-net-based workflow tools.

Workflow mining: discovering process models from event logs

TL;DR: A new algorithm is presented to extract a process model from a so-called "workflow log" containing information about the workflow process as it is actually being executed and represent it in terms of a Petri net.

Petri nets with individual tokens

TL;DR: In this article, the authors introduce the concept of Petri nets (place/transition-nets), where actual system states are represented as distributions of "black" tokens onto the places of the nets.

Distributed Software System Design Representation Using Modified Petri Nets

TL;DR: The model is based on a modified form of Petri net, and enables one to represent both the structure and the behavior of a distributed software system at a desired level of design.

Reduction and expansion of live and safe marked graphs.

Tadao Murata, +1 more
TL;DR: It is proved that certain parallel, series, and circuit reductions and expansions on a marked graph do not change the number of its equivalence classes of live and safe markings.
