Abstract
Starts with a brief review of the history and the application areas considered in the literature. The author then proceeds with introductory modeling examples, behavioral and structural properties, three methods of analysis, subclasses of Petri nets and their analysis. In particular, one section is devoted to marked graphs, the concurrent system model most amenable to analysis. Introductory discussions on stochastic nets with their application to performance modeling, and on high-level nets with their application to logic programming, are provided. Also included are recent results on reachability criteria. Suggestions are provided for further reading on many subject areas of Petri nets. >

The application of Petri-nets to workflow management

TL;DR: This paper introduces workflow management as an application domain for Petri nets, presents state-of-the-art results with respect to the verification of workflows, and highlights some Petri-net-based workflow tools.

Workflow mining: discovering process models from event logs

TL;DR: A new algorithm is presented to extract a process model from a so-called "workflow log" containing information about the workflow process as it is actually being executed and represent it in terms of a Petri net.

Analysis of petri nets by stepwise refinements

TL;DR: If the firing of a Transition in a Petri net is considered non instantaneous, it becomes possible to replace a transition in a net B by another net 8’, which allows the description and the analysis of a control structure by stepwise refinements.

Performance models of multiprocessor systems

TL;DR: This is the first to focus entirely on the problem of modeling and performance evaluation of multiprocessor systems using analytical methods, and focuses on contention for physical system resources, such as shared devices and interconnection networks.

A Generalized Timed Petri Net Model for Performance Analysis

TL;DR: The GTPN model has capabilities for modeling and analyzing parallel systems lacking in existing SPN models and provides an efficient, easily used method of obtaining accurate performance estimates for models of computer systems which include both deterministic and geometric holding times.
