Abstract
Starts with a brief review of the history and the application areas considered in the literature. The author then proceeds with introductory modeling examples, behavioral and structural properties, three methods of analysis, subclasses of Petri nets and their analysis. In particular, one section is devoted to marked graphs, the concurrent system model most amenable to analysis. Introductory discussions on stochastic nets with their application to performance modeling, and on high-level nets with their application to logic programming, are provided. Also included are recent results on reachability criteria. Suggestions are provided for further reading on many subject areas of Petri nets. >

Journal ArticleDOI

The application of Petri-nets to workflow management

TL;DR: This paper introduces workflow management as an application domain for Petri nets, presents state-of-the-art results with respect to the verification of workflows, and highlights some Petri-net-based workflow tools.
Journal ArticleDOI

Workflow mining: discovering process models from event logs

TL;DR: A new algorithm is presented to extract a process model from a so-called "workflow log" containing information about the workflow process as it is actually being executed and represent it in terms of a Petri net.

Stochastic Petri net representation of discrete event simulations

TL;DR: The principle result is that for any (finite or) countable state GSMP (generalized semi-Markov process) there exists an SPN having a marking process that mimics the GSMP in the sense that the two processes have the same finite dimensional distributions.

Petri nets and speed independent design

TL;DR: Petri nets are investigated as one method of modeling speed independent asynchronous circuits and their usefulness is emphasized by the design of a speed independent processor from modules developed in the investigation of Petri net implementation.

Mathematical methods for calculating invariants in Petri nets

TL;DR: A computationally feasible procedure for the generation of all invariants satisfying a given homogenous linear Diophantine system Cx=0 is presented, where C is the flow matrix of an associated P/T net.

A partial solution to the reachability-problem for vector-addition systems

TL;DR: It is shown that the reachability-problem is decidable in dim and a partial solution is given for the general problem covering a wide instance of it, and a semi-linear characterization is obtained for the complete set of solutions.
