A comprehensive investigation on performance of oil and gas development in Nigeria: Technical and non-technical analyses

TL;DR: In this article, a comprehensive and quantitative analysis of Nigerian oil and gas project performance from technical and non-technical perspectives with data from 65 projects was carried out, and a set of recommended practices was developed based on the risk level to assist project planners, international companies, investors, and policymakers to mitigate risks of developing oil-and gas projects.

Investigating the challenges of refinery construction in Nigeria: A snapshot across two-timeframes over the past 55 years

TL;DR: A systematic literature review within the academic journals, source documents from the industry, relevant interviews from published news media and consulting organisations were used to identify and categorise these challenges as mentioned in this paper.

A Review of Performance Appraisals of Nigerian Federal Government-Owned Refineries

TL;DR: A review of previous works on the performance appraisal of Nigerian government-owned refineries can be found in this article, which reveals that the energy consumption patterns are below international benchmarks in the oil and gas industry.

Business improvement through quality management systems

TL;DR: In this article, the authors focus on the use of the ISO 9000 series certification and self-assessment against an excellence model, as two examples of management fads which have survived for a long period of time.

Total maintenance management: a systematic approach

Abstract: Discusses a systematic approach to total maintenance management. Presents a methodology suitable for measuring the current effectiveness of the maintenance system and identifying areas of potential improvement. For situations in which improvement rate becomes insignificant, benchmarking is proposed for setting new targets. Also outlines necessary benchmarking steps.

Self‐audit of process performance

TL;DR: In this article, the authors argue for removing one of the principles of traditional auditing, namely independence, to empower the process owner to conduct periodic self-evaluations of process performance, which would be less formal than quality audits, and, much like the better-known self-assessments against business excellence models, aimed at continuous quality improvement.

Q1. What are the contributions in "Petrochemical industry in nigeria: a performance appraisal" ?

This project reviews what needs to be done in the industry to achieve these desired improvements.

The industry needs more focus on (i) developing the skills of its workers, (ii) employinghigher-quality processes, (iii) achieving customer satisfaction and faster delivery, and (iv) appointing more entrepreneurial leaders.

The primary objective of the self-audit is to evaluate and upgrade ones behaviour, by continually examining both the performance enablers and achieved results.

The economic impact of a reduced indigenous performance resulted in the shortfall in polypropylene production to supply Nigeria’ s demand.

(Business performance enablers can be grouped into three categories: goals (including strategy, policy and objectives), resources (people, materials, information and infrastructure) and processes (including leadership and realization of outputs) (Karapetrovic and Willborn, 2002)).

The basic requirements for continual improvement are: identifying accurately the problem, and motivating yourself (and others) to solve it by taking effective actions (Forsha, 1992).

Shirley and Gryna, (1998), emphasized that, in order to achieve self-control, process owners or controllers must know: • What their actual performance has been.

It is apparent that during times of rapid inflation, comparing results for one period against those for a different period could lead to misleading values of the productivity index.

The audit of a system will help (i) determine the effectiveness of existing operations, (ii) highlight the strengths and weaknesses in the systems and processes, and (iii) devise an implementable plan and controls for the activities to achieve higher productivities.

Annual imported supplement = 23, 9800 metric tonnes.at production cost of $136.36/t = $32562768 at selling price of $150/t = $ 35820000Cost in foreign exchange = $ 3257232

While process-quality audits, self-assessments and benchmarking are all used to evaluate achieved performances against set criteria (ISO 9000 Standards business-excellence models, Malcolm Aldridge National and European Quality Awards, and state-of-the-art approaches, respectively), each methodology has its own merits (and limitations).

Because a self-audit includes the measurement and comparison of what has been achieved with desired levels of performance, it may be represented as a process with a negativefeedback loop (see Figure 1).

sometimes interrelated, causes included the irregular supplies of feedstocks from the refineries, lack of adequate operating capital, insufficient maintenance budgets, mistakes in the plant’ s original design, limitations imposed by the inadequately trained workforce, improper maintenance policies, ageing plants and poor management.
