TLDR
It is concluded that the determination of circulating plasma levels of nitrite plus nitrate may be useful in forecasting the severity of illness and the occurrence of septic shock; therapeutic approaches associated with inhibition of nitric oxide synthesis may be worth trying in infants with sepsis.

Nitrate, bacteria and human health.

TL;DR: The evidence that nitrate-reducing commensals have a true symbiotic role in mammals and facilitate a previously unrecognized but potentially important aspect of the nitrogen cycle is considered.

The role of inflammatory cytokines and nitric oxide in the pathogenesis of necrotizing enterocolitis

TL;DR: NO is produced in large quantity byEnterocytes in the intestinal wall of infants with NEC and leads to apoptosis of enterocytes in apical villi through peroxynitrite formation, and the levels of inflammatory cytokines and NO in the intestine of infants undergoing surgical resection for NEC are examined.

The Role of Nitric Oxide in Sepsis--An Overview

TL;DR: It is emphasized that many septic patients have preexisting endothelial dysfunction and lung diseases, which may contribute to adverse effects by systemic inhibition of NO synthesis, and the potential therapeutic implications of NO as a target in treatment of human septic shock.

TL;DR: The role of nitrite and nitrate assays (alongside direct measurements of nitric oxide in breath) may be restricted to the monitoring of disease progression, or response to therapy in individual patients or subgroups.

Pathophysiology and Treatment of Septic Shock in Neonates

TL;DR: Genomic and proteomic approaches, particularly those that use very small sample volumes, will increase the understanding of the pathophysiology and direct the development of novel agents for prevention and treatment of severe sepsis and shock in the neonate.

Effects of endothelium-derived nitric oxide on peripheral arteriolar tone in man.

TL;DR: Results indicate that the dilator action of endothelium-derived NO contributes to the control of basal and stimulated regional blood flow in man.

Role of nitric oxide synthesis in macrophage antimicrobial activity.

TL;DR: It is suggested that synthesis of NO mediates much of the antimicrobial activity of mouse macrophages against some fungal, helminthic, protozoal and bacterial pathogens.

The Pathogenesis of Sepsis

TL;DR: Rather than being caused by any single pathogenic mechanism, it is more likely that sepsis is related to the state of activation of the target cell, the nearby presence of other mediators, and the ability of thetarget cell to release other mediator, so the body can no longer control its own inflammatory response.

Mammalian nitrate biosynthesis: mouse macrophages produce nitrite and nitrate in response to Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharide.

TL;DR: Mycobacterium bovis infection of C3h/He and C3H/HeJ mice resulted in a large increase in nitrate production over the course of the infection for both strains, suggesting T-lymphocyte-mediated activation of macrophages as a potent stimulus for nitrate biosynthesis.
